This month marks three years since Troy Christensen became Executive Director of PorchLight.

In a new reflection on our website, Troy looks back on the growth, challenges, and lessons of the past three years while sharing his hopes for the future of PorchLight and the men we serve.

We invite you to read his reflections and share your own thoughts. What do you hope PorchLight continues building toward in the years ahead?

Partnerships grow best when people are willing to get their hands dirty together.

We’re grateful to the incredible Target team who spent the day at PorchLight helping plant our garden. What they helped build is more than a garden bed. It’s a space that will provide fresh food, connection, and care for the men we serve.

There was a great energy in the shelter during dinner service recently, thanks to a group of young volunteers who showed up ready to help and connect.

The conversations came naturally, laughter filled the room, and the sense of camaraderie was impossible to miss. It was one of those evenings that reminded all of us how powerful a simple human connection can be.

At PorchLight, volunteering is about more than serving food. It’s about building community alongside the men we serve and the people who volunteer alongside you.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

At PorchLight, we also recognize the veterans in our community who are now facing homelessness, hardship, and isolation after their service.

We are grateful to those who served and those who continue to stand beside our neighbors in need.

Thank you to Hyatt Regency Bellevue for an incredible short ribs dinner for the men at PorchLight.

The meal was a huge hit, and the Hyatt team brought great energy into the building. We are especially grateful to the staff members who came in to serve alongside us. Sharing a meal and taking time to connect with the men here matters more than people sometimes realize.

We are thankful for Hyatt’s generosity and partnership.

Mental health and homelessness are closely connected.

The National Institute of Health reports that up to 86% of men experiencing homelessness experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives.

At PorchLight, many of the men we serve are navigating trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, or years without consistent support.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of compassionate support for unhoused men in East King County and the need for services that help people move toward stability.

PorchLight was honored to be part of Bellevue College’s Networking & Job Fair this week.

From employment opportunities to volunteering, we appreciated the thoughtful conversations and the genuine interest people showed in serving the community.

Thank you to Bellevue College for welcoming us onto campus and for hosting such a well-organized event. We’re grateful to be part of a community that values connection, service, and opportunity.

Welcome back Holy Family Young Adult Group for your monthly meal service.

This group brings a steady, positive energy every time they walk through the door. Dinner is part of it, but what stands out is what happens after. They stay. They sit down. They talk and get to know the men we serve.

Those moments of connection matter. Building trust, creating a sense of belonging... reminds each person here that they are seen.

We’re grateful to have this group as a regular part of the PorchLight volunteer community and always look forward to their next visit.
