Looking for a fun and meaningful way to give back to your community? Volunteer at Kelsey Creek Farm's annual Farm Fair!

This beloved, long‑running event brings families together and we need your help to make it happen.

We’re recruiting:
• Event Volunteers – Assist with setting up, running children’s activity booths, and supporting general event operations. Gain experience in teamwork, customer service, and working with kids while earning community service hours.
• Clean‑Up Volunteers – Wrap up the event by helping break down activities and preparing the farm for the next day. A great hands‑on way to learn event operations and teamwork—and earn service hours!

Identifying Grain

Can you tell which grain is which? Some of them are easy, like oats. When mature, oat grains drop down and hang from the top of the grass. Wheat, barley, and rye are difficult to tell apart because they have similar seed heads. The trick is to look closely at the arrangement of the seeds: barley grains grow individually, rye grains grow in pairs, and wheat grains grow in groups of three.

What is Grain

In most species of grass, the seeds are so tiny it can be hard to identify them. However, people domesticated several grass species, and in that process, they selected for larger seeds. These large seeds from specific, domesticated grass species are what we now call grain.

Wheat, oats, barley, and rye were domesticated in the Middle East beginning around 10,000 years ago. Rice was domesticated in China beginning around 9,000 years ago, and corn was domesticated in Mesoamerica beginning around 8,000 years ago. On average, grains now compose 48% of individual people’s calorie intake.
