Every child deserves access to the mental health care they need to thrive.

Young people are facing a mental health crisis that did not exist at this scale a generation ago. We know prevention and early intervention works. The best place to reach kids is where they already are, in school, with trained professionals who can identify struggles early and connect families to real support.

Mental health is equal to physical health. I support funding our schools, staffing our counseling programs, and supporting the young people growing up in Hendricks County.

This is exactly why I am a Mental Health Now candidate.

Mental health care should be affordable and easy to get. Right now it is neither for too many families in Hendricks County and across Indiana.

Half of people who need mental health services are not getting them. When they do not get help, the consequences do not stay private. They show up in our schools, our emergency rooms, our workplaces, and our communities.

Part of the problem is insurance companies that delay and deny mental health coverage their customers are already paying for. You pay your premiums. Your doctor prescribes care. The insurance company should cover it. When they do not, families pay twice, once in premiums and again out of pocket.

The Indiana Capital Chronicle reported this week that 80% of eligible low-income children in Indiana are not being served by subsidized childcare programs.

That's eight out of ten families who qualify that are not getting help.

This is a socioeconomic problem that effects all communities in Hendricks County. Parents can't work without childcare and businesses can't grow without workers.

While the need grows, Indiana is cutting reimbursement rates for the providers who serve these families. Infant and toddler care down 10%. Preschoolers down 15%. School-age children down 35%.

Our neighbors deserve better than this.

No other peer nation allows gun violence to steal the lives of so many of their children.

This crisis is uniquely American.

Every year, hundreds of kids and teens find unsecured guns and unintentionally shoot themselves or others.

On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, I to highlight the importance of secure gun storage. Storing guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition can save lives.

Time will tell, but the move of the Chicago Bears to NWI brings a possible revitalization for an area that has had economic struggles for many years.
