Students in the 8th grade combined math and art to finish their project, with outstanding results! Students worked to create a tessellation where interlocking patterns fit together perfectly with zero gaps or overlaps. Inspired by the legendary M.C. 8th grade scholars presented a Wax Museum for their Social Studies final project. They selected a famous American who made important contributions to the American story, including athletes, actors, and activists. Students wrote an essay about their subject, created a poster to share their American’s accomplishments, and took on the role of people like trailblazing Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, baseball player and fighter pilot Ted Williams, Detroit boxing legend Joe Louis, and comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. We’re proud of the work our 8th grade scholars put into this project, and wish them all the best as they move on to high school!

As part of our unit on The Giver, students explored the theme of conformity by analyzing how it is represented throughout the text. To deepen their understanding, they created visual images that symbolize conformity within the community. These visuals required students to think critically about the author’s message and how structure, setting, and character actions contribute to that theme.

Building on this, students are now creating their own original visual representations to serve as a summary of the novel. Each image reflects key events, themes, and ideas from the text, allowing students to synthesize their learning in a creative and meaningful way.

This activity has encouraged strong engagement, deeper analysis, and thoughtful discussions around conformity, individuality, and the consequences of both.
