We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who came out yesterday and joined us for the Memorial Day parade. Your support and presence made it truly special on such a beautiful day.
Yesterday, we gathered not only as a community, but as a nation, to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
It was an honor to stand alongside our community to pay tribute to our fallen heroes. Thank you for helping us keep their memory alive.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day – Sumpter Township Fire Department 🇺🇸
This Memorial Day, we solemnly honor the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy.
As you gather with family and friends, we ask you to pause, reflect, and remember the true meaning of this day and to celebrate safely:
• Never drink and drive•Use caution with grills and open flames•Stay alert around water
Take a moment today to honor the fallen, attend a ceremony, fly your flag, or simply observe a moment of silence.
We remember. We honor. We are forever grateful. Stay safe and have a respectful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸

April is World Autism Awareness Month, and today, April 2, is Awareness Day. We want to take this opportunity to recognize the millions of Americans living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Autism now affects 1 in 36 children in the United States, a staggering increase from the 1980s, when the disorder was found in only 1 to 4 out of every 10,000 individuals. Despite challenges, Americans with ASD have made, and will continue to make, outstanding contributions in the world.

Early detection is crucial to improving the quality of life of those with ASD, as timely intervention can significantly improve long-term outcomes. Identifying signs of autism at an early stage allows parents and healthcare providers to implement therapies and support strategies that can enhance communication and social skills.

THIS IS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN MICHIGAN

As part of this initiative, all Sumpter Township residents are encouraged to take a moment to familiarize themselves with the emergency siren procedures for the township.

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP EMERGENCY SIREN PROCEDURE

Sumpter Township has fourteen emergency notification sirens strategically positioned throughout the township. In the event of an emergency that requires community notification through the use of the township siren system, the following procedure should be followed:

1. In the event of inclement weather (severe thunderstorm with possible severe damaging winds of 58mph+, large hail, or tornado warning), the sirens will be activated. The community response to the activation should be to seek shelter on the lowest level (basement) of their dwelling or inside a nearby building if outside or in a mobile home.

2. If no basement is available, move into the interior area of the building with as few windows as possible and take cover. Residents inside mobile homes should move to an emergency site inside their park if the current conditions permit such a move.

3. If the siren system is activated and there is no apparent bad weather, residents are advised to tune into local TV and radio stations for possible public service announcements that may be related to a non-weather emergency condition (i.e., hazardous material spill, wildfire, Nuclear Power Plant condition, etc.).

4. Based on Sumpter Township's location within Wayne County, monitoring neighboring counties (Washtenaw, Monroe, and Lenawee) takes place to obtain as much advanced severe weather condition information as possible.

Actual weather/emergency-related siren activation cycles run steadily for 5 minutes. Please be advised that activation cycles may be repeated during an incident to ensure residents are alerted to the situation.

There is no "all-clear" signal. Please tune in to local media outlets for information on when the threat is over.

*The siren system is tested on the first Friday of each month at noon. The test runs for approximately one minute.

**IMPORTANT NOTICE**

Wednesday, March 18th, at 1:00 p.m., is designated a statewide tornado drill. While other area communities might be activating their siren systems during this drill, SUMPTER TOWNSHIP WILL NOT BE ACTIVATING OUR SIRENS so as not to create confusion with residents who are unaware of the drill. We ask that you instead use the time to research and develop an emergency action plan for yourselves and your families.

To be designated as StormReady, a community must:

- Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center

- Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public

- Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally

- Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars

- Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.
