A heartfelt thank you to Hour Detroit for joining us at Guiding Harbor's Tea & Tour on May 2 at River of Life Church in Belleville.

This special event brought together community members and supporters to learn more about our mission while raising funds for **Girlstown**, Guiding Harbor's longest-running residential program. Girlstown provides a safe, supportive home for girls ages 10–17 in Michigan's foster care system who have experienced trauma, instability, or emotional and behavioral challenges.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share the impact of this program and the life-changing work happening every day at Guiding Harbor. Thank you, Hour Detroit, for helping us shine a light on the needs of vulnerable youth and the importance of community support.

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month. It is also National Mental Health Awareness Month. And that is not a coincidence.

The two are deeply, undeniably connected, and this month, we want to take the time to talk about why.

Right now, nearly 329,000 children are in the U.S. foster care system. The majority of them did not enter care because of abuse. They entered because a family was overwhelmed, by poverty, by untreated mental illness, by a crisis that had no village around it to help absorb the weight.

Approximately 90% of children in foster care have experienced at least one traumatic event. And 41% had a diagnosed mental health condition before they ever entered the system.

These are not statistics about broken families. They are statistics about unsupported ones.

All month long, we will be sharing stories, research, and honest conversations about how children end up in foster care, and what all of us can do about it. Not just foster parents. Every one of us.

Because every child deserves a village. And building one starts with paying attention.

Most of us learned to drive from a parent. Learned to cook from watching someone. Learned to balance a checkbook because someone sat down and showed us.
Foster kids aging out of the system? Once they age out, no one is obligated to show up for them anymore, but they still need love and guidance.

We're hosting a FREE Virtual Foster Parent Orientation on Thursday, May 22nd and we'd love for you to join us!

At Guiding Harbor, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and fully accepted for exactly who they are. That's why we're proud to be an LGBTQ+ affirming agency, because every kid deserves a home where they're not just tolerated, but truly celebrated.
