๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ We know school just got out, but we're already thinking about the next school year!

For children in foster care, heading back to school can be both exciting and overwhelming. That's why we're starting now to make sure every child has the supplies and essentials they need to begin the school year feeling confident and ready to succeed.

Do you remember getting those brand-new school shoes? Or that first-day outfit that made you feel so good about yourself? Those moments may seem small, but they can make a world of difference in a child's confidence and sense of belonging.

YOU can help make that happen for a child in foster care.

Purchase school supplies directly from our Amazon Wishlist:
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2A4BEZ3FOYST1?ref_=abls_nvfly_swy

You can also help by donating gift cards so youth can pick out their own clothes, shoes, and school essentials. Giving them the opportunity to choose items they love helps build confidence and allows them to express their individuality as they start a new school year.

Every backpack, notebook, pair of shoes, outfit, and gift card helps a child feel supported, valued, and prepared for success.

Thank you for helping us ensure foster youth in our community start the school year with everything they need to thrive. โค๏ธ

Raising a teen takes a village, and village, we need your help!!

Youth in Guiding Harborโ€™s Independent Living Plus Program are preparing for adulthood, and they need caring adults who are willing to show up, share wisdom, and help them build real-life skills.

Mentors can make a lasting impact by teaching things like cooking, budgeting, balancing a checkbook, leadership, career readiness, confidence, and everyday life skills many of us learned because someone took the time to guide us.

These young people are bright, capable, and full of potential. Sometimes, they just need another steady voice in their corner.

If you have time, experience, encouragement, or a skill to share, we would love for you to be part of our village.

Today is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and Black joy. It is also a bittersweet reminder that freedom was delayed.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received news of emancipation, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. For many, Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reminder of delayed justice, delayed truth, and delayed recognition.

That truth matters deeply in foster care.

We applaud adults of all races who open their homes and hearts to love and care for children. But when white foster or adoptive parents are raising Black children, love must include more than safety and shelter.

Love must include culture.
Love must include truth.
Love must include humility, listening, and learning.

In Michiganโ€™s child welfare system, children of color are overrepresented in care. Because of that, many foster and foster-to-adopt placements cross racial lines. A loving home is essential, but love alone is not enough to protect a child from the realities of race, identity, bias, and belonging.

Black children deserve to grow up knowing the fullness of who they are.

That means teaching Black history beyond trauma. Celebrating Black excellence and joy. Honoring holidays like Juneteenth. Learning traditions, stories, hair care, skin care, and the everyday ways culture shows up.

It also means preparing children for bias, making sure they are not the only person who looks like them in their school, church, neighborhood, or activities, and being ready to advocate when their dignity is on the line.

Juneteenth reminds us that delayed freedom was still injustice.

So today, our call to foster and adoptive parents is this:

Do not delay justice, knowledge, identity, or culture any longer than it already has been.

Teach the history. Celebrate the culture. Build the village. Listen to Black voices. Honor your childโ€™s whole identity.

Because truly loving a child means loving all of who they are.

For many, trauma is not only tied to what happened before entering care. It can also come from separation, uncertainty, repeated moves, cultural disconnection, and the fear of being unwanted or moved again.

This is often seen as belonging anxiety.

It may show up as attachment struggles, difficulty trusting adults, withdrawal, anger, clinginess, or behavioral challenges. Underneath those responses is often a child asking, โ€œAm I safe? Am I wanted? Will I have to leave again?โ€

We can help mitigate this by creating predictability, validating grief, supporting safe family connections, honoring culture and identity, and using trauma-informed care.

Healing happens when children experience consistent safety, connection, and belonging.

๐Ÿ’™ June is PTSD Awareness Month and it's a great reminder that healing isnโ€™t linear, and every childโ€™s story deserves compassion.

Many children enter foster care after experiencing trauma, instability, or loss. For caregivers, that means looking beyond the behavior and asking: *What is this child trying to communicate?*

At Guiding Harbor, we champion trauma-informed care by meeting children where they are, building trust over time, and creating safe, consistent environments where healing can begin.

๐Ÿ’™ Behind every foster family's journey is a team committed to helping them succeed.

At Guiding Harbor, our Foster Care program is about more than finding homes for childrenโ€”it's about building strong, supportive relationships that help families thrive. We recruit, train, and support foster parents across Michigan, providing guidance every step of the way.

From licensing and placement to ongoing resources, advocacy, and encouragement, you'll never navigate the foster care journey alone.

Because when foster families are supported, children have a greater opportunity to heal, grow, and flourish. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒˆ MYTH: LGBTQ+ individuals and couples can't become foster parents.

โœจ FACT: At Guiding Harbor, we welcome foster parents from all backgrounds. What matters most isn't who you areโ€”it's your ability to provide a safe, loving, and supportive home for a child.

Every young person deserves to feel seen, valued, accepted, and loved. And every caring adult deserves the opportunity to make a difference in a child's life.

This Pride Month, we're celebrating the families, caregivers, and youth who remind us that love, belonging, and acceptance come in many forms.

๐Ÿ’™ Foster care is for everyone.
๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Because every child deserves a place where they can be themselves.

Meet Grace. ๐Ÿ’š
Grace is a University of Michigan student interning with us this summer, and she's headed into the foster care field on purpose. When we asked her why, her answer was simple:
"Because kids need good advocates."

She's right. Right now, roughly 10,000 children are in Michigan's foster care system, and the people who walk alongside them, the social workers who manage placements, guide family reunification, and recruit and support foster homes, are stretched thin. High turnover, burnout, and heavy caseloads have created an urgent need for qualified, caring professionals.

That's why students like Grace matter so much. Every kid in care deserves someone in their corner who shows up, listens, and fights for what's best for them.

To Grace, and to everyone choosing this work: thank you. The kids need you. ๐Ÿ’š
