Phew! Today’s heat was no joke!

While the kids at Safety Town were hard at work learning important safety skills, the high heat index started to creep up. The Bellefontaine Police Department reached out to see if we could help cool things down, and we were happy to roll in with some refreshing relief.

This also gave our crews a great chance to get in some valuable training. We practiced relay pumping, aerial operations, and completed pre‑planning for this location — all while helping the kids beat the heat.

Thank you to BPD for the invitation. We’re always grateful for opportunities to engage with our community and strengthen the partnership between our departments.

⚠️ FLOOD WATCH & HEAVY RAIN SAFETY NOTICE ⚠️

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Logan County effective today, May 26 at 1:44 PM through Wednesday, May 28 at 2:00 AM due to the potential for additional heavy rainfall across the area.

The City of Bellefontaine has already experienced significant rainfall resulting in localized flooding and high water in several areas. While water has receded and in continuing to recede in many locations, additional rain remains in the forecast and conditions can change quickly.

Please use extreme caution and remember:

🚫 NEVER drive through standing or moving water.
Just a small amount of water can stall a vehicle or wash it off the roadway. If you encounter high water, TURN AROUND — DON’T DROWN.

Residents can also help reduce localized drainage issues by:

✅ Clearing leaves, sticks, and debris away from nearby catch basins and storm drains
✅ Securing outdoor items that could wash into drainage systems
✅ Monitoring sump pumps and downspouts to ensure they are functioning properly
✅ Avoiding placing grass clippings or debris in streets or ditches

If you encounter an emergency situation, please call 911. For non-emergency flooding, street, or drainage concerns, please contact the Mayor’s Office.

Please stay alert, stay safe, and continue to monitor local weather updates throughout the next several days.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help us celebrate Assistant Chief Mark Layman’s retirement after 25 years of service. It was a special day surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters — including some of the original crew members who served alongside him through the years.

A memorable end to a career as he was given a well-deserved ride home in Engine 21. Congratulations, Mark, and thank you for your years of commitment to the community.

Today, we officially received our new fire engine! Engine 21 will be replacing our current Engine 22, which has faithfully served for the past 23 years. Over the years, Engine 22 has experienced many mechanical issues, as well some structural issues, making it time for a replacement.
Our new Engine 21 brings several improvements that will better serve our community, including carrying 250 more gallons of water and a pump capable of flowing an additional 300 gallons per minute over the previous engine’s 1200 gallons per minute. These upgrades will help us continue providing reliable and effective fire protection for years to come.
We would also like to thank everyone who came out today to help move equipment from the old engine to the new one. Your support and teamwork are greatly appreciated!
We look forward to putting Engine 21 into service and continuing to serve our community with pride.
