First harvest of cabbage in the Master Gardener Demonstration Plot. The harvest was donated to the kitchen at the Lutheran Community Services.

Our Pollinator of the Month for July is the soldier beetle! This helpful little insect is not the sort of bug that we usually picture when we imagine pollinators, but it's essential to Ohio ecosystems nonetheless. Soldier beetles are often found on yellow flowers, particularly goldenrod. The soldier beetle family, Cantharidae, contains thousands of species, with a few hundred of them being found throughout the United States. One of the Master Gardener Demonstration Plots at the Troy Road Community Garden. This plot contains tomato plants, borage to repel the tomato horn worm and enhance tomato flavor, with a surrounding border of onions which are also pest repellants of tomatoes.
