🌀 FRIDAY TROPICAL UPDATE | AUGUST 28, 2026

Gilchrist County Emergency Management continues to keep an eye on the tropics, and today we have some good news regarding Dolly.

As of this morning, Dolly is now post-tropical, and the National Hurricane Center's outlook shows no additional areas of tropical development across the Atlantic basin at this time.

For Gilchrist County, Dolly does not pose a threat to our area.

While this particular system is no longer a concern, we are approaching the historical peak of hurricane season, so this is not the time to put away those hurricane plans or supplies.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – US 129 & CR 340 🚨

Please be advised that US 129 and County Road 340 are currently shut down due to a vehicle accident with injuries.

Emergency personnel are on scene. Motorists should avoid the area and seek an alternate route until the roadway is reopened.

Please use caution in the surrounding area and allow emergency responders room to work.

🌀 TROPICAL UPDATE | THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2026

Gilchrist County Emergency Management is continuing to monitor the tropics. Invest 96L has now developed into Tropical Storm Dolly.

While the system now has a name, this does not mean Gilchrist County or Florida is currently in the forecast for impacts. There remains uncertainty regarding Dolly’s future track and intensity, and conditions can change as the system continues across the Atlantic.

⚠️ For Gilchrist County, the message remains the same: stay informed and stay prepared.

Now is a good time to make sure your hurricane preparations are in order:
🔹 Review your family’s hurricane plan.
🔹 Check your emergency supply kit and replace anything you may be missing.
🔹 Keep vehicles fueled and important documents accessible.
🔹 Know where you will receive trusted weather information.

There is no reason for alarm at this time, but hurricane season is active and Tropical Storm Dolly is a reminder that we should always be prepared before a storm becomes a threat.

🌀 WEDNESDAY TROPICAL UPDATE | AUGUST 26, 2026

Gilchrist County Emergency Management continues to monitor Invest 96L in the eastern tropical Atlantic.

There is some encouraging news in today’s update. The chance for development has decreased from yesterday, and computer models have generally backed off on how much strengthening may occur.

🔹 Invest 96L currently has a 60% chance of development over the next 48 hours and the next 7 days.

🔹 The system remains disorganized and does not currently have a closed circulation.

🔹 A tropical depression or weak tropical storm could still briefly form over the next day or two as the system moves west to west-northwest across the Atlantic.

🔹 By this weekend, conditions are expected to become increasingly unfavorable for development, including dry Saharan air and stronger wind shear. Some guidance indicates the system could remain an open tropical wave or dissipate altogether.

🔹 Forecast guidance is increasingly favoring a weaker system remaining farther south as it crosses the Atlantic. However, there is still uncertainty regarding what remains of the system as we move into next week.

⚠️ At this time, it is still too early to determine what, if any, impacts Invest 96L could eventually have on Florida.

Here at home, we also need to keep an eye on our day-to-day weather. An unsettled pattern will continue across North Florida, bringing scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Any stronger storms could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall, and North Florida has a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for flash flooding Thursday and Friday.

For Gilchrist County, this remains a stay informed and stay prepared situation—not a reason for alarm.

🌀 TUESDAY MORNING TROPICAL UPDATE | AUGUST 25, 2026

Gilchrist County Emergency Management continues to monitor activity in the Atlantic.

The area we are watching in the far eastern Atlantic, Invest 96L, now has a 70% chance of tropical development over the next seven days. The National Hurricane Center indicates that development is possible as the system moves westward across the tropical Atlantic.

There is still considerable uncertainty this far out. Current model guidance shows a wide range of possibilities—some weaken the system, some allow it to develop, and others eventually turn it northward.

Based on current guidance, the system could approach the Lesser Antilles or waters north of the islands this weekend, but forecasts become increasingly spread out beyond that point. There is currently no reliable forecast suggesting a specific impact to Gilchrist County or Florida.

⚠️ The important message right now is awareness, not alarm.

We are entering a time of year when tropical activity can increase quickly. Now is a good time to:
🔹 Review your hurricane plan.
🔹 Check and restock your disaster supply kit.
🔹 Know where you will get reliable weather information.

🥵🔥 GILCHRIST COUNTY… THE HEAT IS SHOWING OFF AGAIN. Monday August 17🔥🥵

Apparently Florida looked at the thermostat and said, “Yeah, we can go higher.” 😅

The National Weather Service Jacksonville has a Heat Advisory in effect today from 11 AM – 8 PM, including Gilchrist County.

🌡️ High temperatures: 94°–99°
🥵 Peak heat index: 108°–115°

At those temperatures, this isn't just uncomfortable—it can become dangerous quickly.

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
❄️ Spend as much time as possible in air conditioning.
🌳 Take frequent breaks if you have to work outside.
🕐 Save strenuous outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
🐶 Keep pets cool with plenty of fresh water and shade.
🚗 NEVER leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults inside a parked vehicle.

And remember: fans alone may not be enough when temperatures get this high.

🌀 TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE | August 11, 2026

Gilchrist County Emergency Management is monitoring a tropical disturbance in the central tropical Atlantic.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 7-Day Tropical Weather Outlook, the disturbance currently has a 70% chance of tropical cyclone formation within the next seven days.

⚠️ At this time, there is no immediate threat to Gilchrist County. It is still too early to know whether this system will eventually impact Florida or the United States.

Now is the time to remain aware—not alarmed and make sure your hurricane preparations are in place.

🔹 Continue monitoring the tropics and official forecasts.
🔹 Review your family’s hurricane plan.
🔹 Check your hurricane supply kit and replace any missing or expired items.
🔹 Make sure you have multiple ways to receive emergency information.
