Slawson Southeast Occupational Center (SSOC), named after Mr. Richard Slawson, the former Executive Secretary of the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades Council. It is the newest of eleven such schools and runs under the auspice of the Los Angeles Unified School District Division of Adult and Career Education. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. SSOC

is open to all members of the public and serves them through the following programs:

Adult Secondary Education (ASE): Students are able to take all required courses to earn a High School Diploma. Adult Basic Education (ABE): Students can master basic math, improve reading comprehension and grammar usage which prepares the student to successfully complete academic courses offered through the ASE program. Career and Technical Education (CTE): Student can train in a career in a variety of pathways, such as Accounting Clerk, Administrative Assistant, Automotive Specialty Technician, Barber, Chef Assistant, Child Care Worker, Custodian (Building and Grounds), Cosmetologist, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Residential Electrician and many more. English as a Second Language (ESL)

An interesting point is that SSOC sits atop what in the 1940’s was the Williams Ranch. It was here, in the Sleepy Lagoon Reservoir, that the dead body of Jose Gallardo Diaz was found. This led to the Sleepy Lake Lagoon Murder Trial and is recorded as a precursor the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943.
