Stearns County is included in the NWS winter storm warning from 7PM Saturday 3/14 to 7AM Monday 3/16. A broad area of 10 to 16 inches of snow is likely with a narrow swath of snow totals approaching 20 inches is possible. The heaviest snow fall is likely to occur Saturday night into Sunday morning with rates of 2+" per hour severely impacting travel, making it difficult or impossible. Winds will begin increasing on Sunday leading to concerns of blizzard conditions.

NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning Friday March 6th at 3PM and ending Saturday March 7th at 9am. Mixed precipitation expected as rain transitions to snow. Total snow accumulations up to two inches and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the Friday evening commute.

Belgrade Shooting Update
On February 21, 2026, at 11:58 a.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a call from a female saying that her son had shot someone at a residence in 900 block of School Street in the City of Belgrade. When officers arrived, they identified a male who had been shot multiple times.

The male party was transported to Paynesville Hospital, then transported by helicopter to the St. Cloud Hospital, and then Hennepin County Medical Center. It is expected that his injuries are non-life-threatening.

James Basore, 44, of Belgrade was taken into custody. He is being held in custody pending charges from the Stearns County Attorney’s Office.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and Belgrade/Brooten Police Department were assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota DNR, Kandiyohi County Sheriff, and the Cold Spring Police Department.

The Belgrade/Brooten Police Department and Stearns County Sheriff’s Office are on the scene of a shooting in the 900 block of School Street in the City of Belgrade. A male victim was transported the hospital with an unknown condition. One person was taken into custody at the scene.

The victim and suspect were known to each other and there is no danger to the public. Law Enforcement will be on scene for several hours and the public is asked to stay out of the area.

There is no other information at this time and more information will be released at a later time.

Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. * WHERE...Kandiyohi, Meeker, Stearns, Douglas, Pope, Stevens, and Swift Counties. * WHEN...Until 9 PM CST this evening. * IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Stearns County Sheriff's Office has made some changes for 2026 for Belgrade visits for gun permits. They will now be quarterly visits. The next time Stearns County will be out in Belgrade will be March 10, 2026, 8am to noon for permits.

Stearns County is included in a Winter Weather Advisory with a high probability of freezing rain beginning late Monday 1/5 continuing over night and into the morning on Tuesday 1/6. Impacts to travel are likely with a chance of 0.10" or more of ice accumulation. Take precautions if you must travel during these times.
