We’re excited to welcome Paramedic Gavin Rightmyer to the North Mason Regional Fire Authority.

Born in Washington and raised right here in Belfair, Gavin attended Sandhill Elementary, Hawkins Middle School, and North Mason High School, graduating in 2018. He went on to earn his AA from Olympic College in 2020 and completed paramedic school in 2025.

Gavin began his fire service career as a wildland firefighter in 2020 before volunteering with Hoodsport Fire for two years and later joining the department full-time. Looking for a busier pace and an opportunity to continue growing as a firefighter/paramedic ultimately brought him back home to North Mason.

For Gavin, serving this community is especially meaningful. He values being part of a close-knit team, helping people through some of life’s most difficult moments, and having the opportunity to give back to the community where he grew up.

Outside of work, Gavin enjoys hiking, running, camping, boating, and spending time with friends and family. He’s also a loyal Mariners fan, through the good seasons and the tough ones!

**BURN BAN REMINDER**

The burn ban is **still in effect**.

Temperatures have cooled and we’ve received some much-needed rain, but conditions are **not yet safe for outdoor burning**.

Please continue to follow the current burn restrictions until the ban is officially lifted. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation in helping keep our community safe.

Fire Danger Rating Increased to HIGH

Given recent weather conditions and forecasted weather patterns, the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) for Mason County will be elevated from MODERATE to HIGH effective 12:01 AM on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

In accordance with Mason County policy and to maintain consistency with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the following activities will be prohibited on all lands within Mason County effective at that time:

· Permitted Land Clearing Burns
· Residential Burning
· Recreational Fires
· Charcoal and Briquette Fires
· W**d Burning

Please note that these restrictions do not apply to pizza ovens, smokers (pellet), propane fire pits, propane barbecues, or indoor fireplaces equipped with a ¼-inch metal screen over the chimney opening. These devices may continue to be used provided they are operated in a safe manner and in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and any applicable fire safety requirements.

These restrictions are being implemented to reduce the risk of wildfire ignition and protect life, property, and natural resources during the current fire season.

Mason County appreciates the public's cooperation and assistance in helping keep our communities safe from wildfire.

We were happy to help our neighbors yesterday at the 2-alarm brush and structure fire. North Mason was able send Engine 23 from Trails End, Tender 21 from Belfair, and Tender 22 from North Shore Rd.

Brush 21 is 1 week into their deployment on the Little Giant Fire burning along Lake Chelan. They have been working hard, assigned to Structure Protection, establishing contingency lines, and supporting initial attack on any new fires in the area. Thunderstorms have impacted the area, increasing the risk of fire spread and new lightning-caused fires.

This afternoon Brush 21 departed Belfair en route to Chelan County to help fight the Little Giant Fire. Brush 21 is joining up with other firefighters from across the region to relieve firefighters that have spent weeks fighting fires across the state. They are expected to be gone for 2 weeks themselves.

Of note, Firefighter/EMT North and Firefighter/Paramedic Quiroz are joined by a volunteer from Mason County Fire Dist 12 (Matlock). This provides an extra hand on our truck and we can help mentor and grow Dist 12's capabilities and experience.

Smoke from wildfires burning in British Columbia and Eastern Washington is moving into Western Washington. Smoky and hazy conditions are expected to increase over the next several days, and residents may notice the smell of smoke throughout the North Mason area.

The widespread smell of smoke may be coming from regional wildfires and does not necessarily mean there is a fire nearby.

Please call 9-1-1 if you see flames, a distinct column of smoke, or other signs of an active fire. When calling, provide the dispatcher with the most accurate location and description possible.

Mason County is currently under a total outdoor burn ban. Prohibited activities include:
• Recreational fires and campfires
• Residential yard-debris burning
• Land-clearing and w**d burning
• Charcoal and briquette fires

Propane barbecues, propane fire pits with an on/off control, pellet smokers, and pizza ovens may still be used. These devices must be operated safely, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and away from combustible vegetation and materials.

Please remain cautious and help us prevent additional fires during these dry conditions.
