On Wednesday, May 6, students, families, staff, and community members gathered at the National Honor Society’s Turtle Mountain Community High School chapter induction ceremony to celebrate academic achievement, leadership, service, and character. The evening began with a meal cooked by Dana LaFountain and Alicia Davis, followed by a ceremony that recognized new inductees, honored outstanding student leaders, and reflected on the importance of community-centered leadership. The ceremony began with a dinner followed by a keynote address from Dr. Daniel Henry. Dr. Henry shared personal stories about his induction into the National Honor Society during high school and how that experience shaped his understanding of leadership. He encouraged students to remember that leadership is not about titles or recognition, but about being a “good relative” to others and supporting the people and community around them. His message emphasized the importance of service, humility, identity, culture, and leadership in strengthening community connections. A thank you to Dana LaFountain and Alicia Davis for providing a wonderful meal for members and their families to enjoy.

Following the keynote address, students officially accepted membership into the National Honor Society and participated in the induction pledge ceremony. New members received induction pins, special awards, and senior cords before the evening concluded with officer recognition and a slideshow celebrating the accomplishments of students throughout the year.

National Honor Society members showed strong student leadership today by visiting Tiny Turtles and Belcourt Head Start to celebrate Dr. Seuss Week. Our student leaders read books with the younger children and helped them complete a fun coloring activity. The kids were excited to spend time with the high school students and enjoyed listening to the stories. This visit also gave NHS members a chance to serve as positive role models while practicing leadership through service and mentorship. They helped encourage a love for reading and built connections with younger students in our community. The visit ended with lots of smiles and a few treats for the children, making it a fun and meaningful experience for everyone.📚📖🖍️🤍

The National Honor Society officers visited Tiny Turtles today to read to students in honor of Native American Heritage Month. They shared picture books by Indigenous authors and then guided the students through a medicine wheel activity. During the lesson, the officers explained the meaning of the Seven Teachings, and students filled their medicine wheels with drawings of things they are thankful for.
