McPherson Garden
We are asking the public to please help us protect and respect the McPherson Garden. The Garden is located on State Street behind the basketball courts and the Mini Fenway Baseball Field.
Recently, parts of the stone walls surrounding the garden were vandalized and taken apart. It appears much of the recent damage may be the result of youth or children gathering, passing through the area, or using the nearby recreational facilities such as the baseball field and basketball courts.
We ask parents and guardians to please speak with their children about respecting this community space so it can continue to be enjoyed by everyone.
The McPherson Garden Committee was formed to restore and preserve the former home of George McPherson, the first Superintendent of the Belchertown State School. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a place to honor the memory of the residents of the Belchertown State School and the workers who cared for them.
The Garden was designed to be accessible to all and to reflect the early years of the Belchertown State School, when it was considered a model of care for people with disabilities. Today, it serves as a peaceful oasis for reflection, gatherings, celebrations, and community enjoyment.
With nearby recreational areas including the baseball field, basketball and pickleball courts, we kindly ask everyone visiting the area to be mindful, respectful, and help preserve this beautiful community space.
If you see any suspicious activity or vandalism, please report it to us.
