A huge thank you to Pioneer Valley Creative for the time, effort, and dedication that went into creating this documentary and highlighting the work of our K-9 Unit. Your ability to capture not just the training, but the commitment and purpose behind what we do means a great deal.
Thank you as well to the citizens of our town for your continued support of our K-9 program. Your encouragement and trust make this work possible and remind us why we do what we do.
And finally, thank you to my department for giving me the opportunity to work alongside these incredible animals and serve the community that I care so deeply about.
I’m proud of what our K-9 Unit represents, and I’m grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.

On June 17, 2016, our unit’s first canine, Falco, lost his battle with cancer and was ultimately laid to rest.
I don’t intend for this post to be sad in nature, because my time with Falco was incredible and deeply fulfilling. Instead, I share this today to honor and remember a great dog who started our program and helped pave the way for everything that followed.
Falco taught me more than I could have imagined. Not only about working dogs, but about training, handling, and building a program with purpose. He helped shape the direction of our unit and influenced how I approached training and utilization moving forward.
Because of Falco, the foundation was laid for the amazing dogs I’ve had the privilege to work with since. His impact on this program continues to be felt to this day.
Gone, but never forgotten.

A K-9 final alert response (often called a Trained Final Response or TFR) is a specialized, distinct behavior a detection dog is trained to exhibit at the exact source of a target scent. It clearly communicates to the handler that the target has been located. Demonstration model: K-9 Journey.

🐕‍🦺💣 DID YOU KNOW?

Explosives detection dogs are not trained to find "bombs"—they are trained to recognize and locate specific explosive odors.

Because of this, a properly trained detection dog can identify trace amounts of explosive material long before a device is ever assembled.

What makes the job even more impressive is that odors are rarely presented in ideal conditions. Packaging materials, fuel, metal, plastic, weather conditions, crowds, and countless environmental factors can all affect how scent travels and is perceived. Despite these challenges, the dog must isolate the target odor and work its way back to the source.

Detection work requires focus, training, experience, and a strong partnership between the handler and canine.

Every deployment, training scenario, and certification helps ensure our K-9 teams are prepared to locate what others cannot see.

March 13 is National K9 Veterans Day. A day recognizing the working dogs that stood the line beside soldiers, police officers, and search teams. These dogs tracked violent suspects, located explosives, and pushed through terrain most people wouldn’t step into. They carried the same risks as their handlers and asked for nothing in return. Today we honor the dogs who did the work and never asked for the spotlight.
