Everyone be safe and stay cool out there!

Dangerous heat and humidity is expected today and tomorrow for much of Maryland with heat indexes near 100°. Check on older relatives and neighbors to ensure they have working AC. If not, help them get to one of the 11 Harford County Public Library locations to cool down.

It was an exciting day at Rockfield Manor in Bel Air on Tuesday, June 9, as supporters of the historic house and event venue gathered for the unveiling of a plaque expressing thanks to the many individuals, businesses, community organizations and government entities that contributed funds to complete a permanent addition to the manor house, built in the 1920s.

The Town of Bel Air has owned the house and surrounding acreage since the 1990s. The house and grounds, which serve as a venue for weddings, festivals and other events, are managed by the nonprofit Rockfield Foundation. The Foundation oversaw the construction of the addition, which was designed to replace temporary tent structures that had been erected during events with a climate-controlled facility. The ribbon was cut on the addition in July of 2025.

Kellee Kalthof, executive director of the Rockfield Foundation, and Donna Dickey, president of the Foundation Board of Directors, unveiled the plaque Tuesday evening as board members, donors and Bel Air Town officials watched. The plaque, which features the names of the many donors, is mounted on a large stone in front of the manor house.

Gifts were presented to Dickey and Kalthof, including a colorful painting of the addition from Paul Thompson, president of Architectural Design Works Inc., the design firm that worked on the project. Former Bel Air Mayor Stephen Burdette, who served on the Board of Town Commissioners when the Town acquired Rockfield Manor, presented a gift of a T-shirt bearing the image of the AMC Decorators' Show House event held at the manor in 1998.

Stephen Burdette and his wife, Susan, also a former Bel Air Mayor, are among the many contributors highlighted on the plaque.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the expansion project happen!

Earlier this month, Miss Bel Air's Teen Evelyn Brush introduced herself to the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners.

She, along with Miss Bel Air Tiara Kittelberger, are slated to take part in the Bel Air Independence Day celebration on July 4, from the sunrise flag-raising ceremony at Bel Air Town Hall to the fireworks show, launched from Rockfield Park.

Evelyn, who is the inaugural Miss Bel Air's Teen, and Tiara, the 16th Miss Bel Air, will give the official word to launch the fireworks, Evelyn told the Commissioners while giving brief remarks during the Town meeting on June 1.

The full schedule of events on July 4, including morning activities in Shamrock Park, the annual pancake breakfast at Bel Air High School, the downtown parade and much more, is available on the Bel Air Independence Day Committee website, belairjuly4.org. You also can visit the Committee's page, Bel Air 4th of July, for updates.

In her remarks to the Commissioners, Evelyn spoke about her community service initiative, Balance Beyond Standing, to promote awareness of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Evelyn was diagnosed in May of 2025 with the condition, which comes with symptoms such as an increased heart rate, lightheadedness and fatigue when a person goes from sitting to standing.

She also was diagnosed last month with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, or MCAS, a condition that affects the immune system.

Through her platform, Evelyn is advocating for teenagers living with POTS and promoting ways to care for their physical and emotional well being.

Mayor Paula Etting thanked Evelyn for speaking with the Commissioners and said she is looking forward to the Independence Day parade.

"It'll be a great day, starting with the flag raising and ending with those fireworks," she said.

Spotted outside Bel Air Town Hall earlier this week, Town Commissioner Kristien Foss working with her mother, artist Sandy Schlehr to prepare sections of the Hearts of Harford sculpture to receive new tiles.

Mrs. Schlehr and David Hubbard created the mosaic sculpture, covered with more than 3,000 pieces of hand-cut glass, in 2014. It had to be moved while the shared Town Hall/Bel Air Police Department complex was being expanded and renovated, a project finished in 2023.

The sculpture was returned to the Town Hall grounds in May of 2024, re-installed by a Bel Air Department of Public Works crew, as pictured in this post.

Two years later, some of the tiles must be replaced after suffering damage from extreme cold and moisture, according to Mrs. Schlehr.

Keep following us on social media for updates on this wonderful piece of public art, one of dozens that can be found throughout the Town!
