This Gun Violence Awareness Day, we honor the victims and survivors of gun violence.

While firearm homicides have been declining, firearm suicides have not shown similar trends. Since 2022, firearm suicides have increased by 24%. It is essential that we work toward effective strategies to prevent those in crisis from accessing lethal means and to get them the help and support they need to thrive.

If you or someone you know is in crisis or needs to talk, call, text, or chat 988.

Bel Air, MD – June 4, 2026- Given the dry conditions, the Harford County Health Department would like to remind residents of Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR 26.11.07.03C1), which prohibits open fires in Harford County from June 1 - August 31 each year. There are special exceptions for agricultural operations, open fires for recreational purposes such as campfires, and the cooking of food.

Open burning is a violation of Harford County Code 109. A person who violates this provision is guilty of a misdemeanor and, on conviction, is subject to a fine not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000) per day per violation or imprisonment not to exceed six (6) months, or both. Each day a violation occurs is a separate violation.

Information on open burning alternatives can be found at https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/309/YardTrim-Drop-Off-Sites

Please contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300 with any additional questions.

Now that warm weather is here to stay, it's time for bug bite safety tips!

Bugs, including mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies, can spread diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, Zika, and Lyme. While some cases are mild, these diseases can be severe and have lasting consequences. Be sure to do all that you can to minimize your contact with bugs this summer! 🐞

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Harford County Health Department received information from the Maryland Department of Health that a raccoon submitted by Harford County tested unsatisfactory for the rabies virus. While not a confirmation, all unsatisfactory test results are presumed to be positive for the rabies virus.

This raccoon was found in Edgeley Grove Park in Fallston, Maryland, and may have exposed other persons and pets in the surrounding area. Witnessing a live raccoon is not cause for alarm, but if you or your pets have had contact with a raccoon in this area, please contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300 for follow-up.

This office would like to remind the citizens of Harford County of the following ways to protect themselves and their pets:

1) Always keep pets leashed when out for walks and closely monitored in your backyard.
2) All cats, dogs, and ferrets should remain up to date on their rabies vaccinations through their vet office or local rabies vaccination clinic.
3) Cover trash cans and do not leave pet food outside.
4) Avoid feeding, petting, or interacting with wildlife in any way.
5) Notify Harford County Animal Control at 410-638-3505 if you observe a stray animal showing abnormal behaviors such as excessive affection, aggression, lethargy, or disorientation.
