MESSAGE FROM MAYOR COFFMAN:
It’s been 13 days since Beech Grove Police Officer Brian Elliott was killed in the line of duty protecting our community. And in those thirteen days, our community has experienced an outpouring of love and support that few will ever experience.
I shared at Brian’s service that Beech Grove is still piecing ourselves back together and will be for some time. We are able to do this because we are looking out for each other -- residents, businesses, schools, faith communities, along with community and civic organizations. Everyone is doing their part.
There are so many people to thank -- Chief Maurice, Deputy Chief Hurrle, Deputy Chief Mercuri, the entire BGPD and their families, city employees, the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police, the State Fraternal Order of Police, local law enforcement agencies who stepped up to protect us or to support Brian’s family and friends, and our citizens who have gathered to honor and celebrate Brian in ways large and small. We owe a debt of gratitude to the medical teams at Eskenazi for their care and compassion, along with Beech Grove City Schools, for opening their doors to welcome our fellow Hornet back home.
Everyone in our community has felt this loss and offered a part of themselves as we find a way back to healing. It’s been a humbling experience for me as Mayor, and as a life-long resident of Beech Grove, I’m not surprised. To everyone who has made a donation, lifted the family up in prayer, or stopped to thank our officers and offer them support–thank you.
We are Beech Grove, and as each day passes, we get stronger.
And may we all continue to live like Brian - may we all be a little more kind, a little more dedicated, a little more humble and a lot more protective of each other.
I encourage you to remember Brian’s wife, Erin, his parents, Bob and Paula, along with his family and friends in your prayers, or simply by holding space for them in your hearts.
