Under Kentucky law (KRS 189.370), it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus from any direction on a two-lane road when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
Buses are equipped with cameras that record vehicles passing.

Violations are a Class B Misdemeanor, resulting in a $100-$200 fine and/or 30-60 days in jail for the first offense, plus six points on the driver’s record.

Key Legal Requirements in Kentucky:
Stopping Requirement: Traffic in both directions must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.

Exception: Drivers do not have to stop if they are on a highway with a separated median or other physical barrier, and they are traveling in the opposite direction of the bus.

Penalties:
First Offense: $100-$200 fine, and/or 30–60 days in jail, and 6 points on the license.

Subsequent Offense (within 3 years): $300-$500 fine, and/or 60 days to 6 months in jail.

Safety Zone: Students are advised to stay 10–12 feet back from the road.

Proposed Changes: New legislation (2026) is considering allowing cameras on school buses to enforce the law, with potential fines of $300 for a first offense and $500 for a second offense.
