A letter to the citizens of Bedford County, VA

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as they face an unimaginable loss.

We are heartbroken by the tragic shooting that claimed the life of one Carroll County deputy and injured another. Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen deputy’s family, friends, and fellow deputies, as well as the injured deputy, their loved ones, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

We also ask for prayers and support for the law enforcement officers who are working tirelessly and courageously to locate and apprehend the individual responsible for this heinous act. These men and women continue to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities and seek justice for both their fallen and injured brothers.

Today, we mourn alongside the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and honor the ultimate sacrifice made in service to the community. We ask our community to join us in keeping the families, deputies, and entire Carroll County law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The law enforcement community is a family, and when one agency hurts, we all hurt. We stand with Carroll County today and in the days ahead.

Rest easy, Deputy. We have the watch from here.

***Large Drug Arrest***

On 05/16/2026, members of the Bedford County Sheriffs Office Community Action Team and the James River Regional Drug Task Force began conducting a drug investigation involving Joshua Cole.

During the course of the investigation, Mr. Cole was found to be distributing large amounts of methamphetamine in multiple jurisdictions in the Commonwealth. On 05/18/2026, a traffic stop was conducted by the task force and members of the Bedford County Sheriffs Office where Joshua Cole was taken into custody.

Charges placed:
-18.2-248 Possess with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine
-18.2-250 Possession of Co***ne

Items Seized during the investigation:
• 946 grams of methamphetamine (2lbs+)
• 8 grams of co***ne

The James River Regional Drug Task Force is comprised of investigative personnel from the Virginia State Police, Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Bedford Police Department, Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, Buena Vista Police Department, and Lexington Police Department.

Sheriff Miller and the men and women of the sheriff's office are proud to announce that Inv. Robbie Burnette has been named the Virginia Sheriffs' Association (VSA) Deputy of the Year.

Investigator Burnette was awarded this honor for his outstanding investigative work, dedication, and professionalism during the investigation into the 2022 homicide of Katlyn Lyon in Bedford County. Assigned as the lead investigator, Inv. Burnette and the team of investigators he led, tirelessly pursued every lead through countless hours of neighborhood and business canvassing, conducting interviews, and digital evidence analysis.

Through his determination and leadership, investigators were able to place the suspect, Trenton Frye, at the victim's residence at the time of the homicide. His efforts ultimately led to Frye being charged and convicted of First-Degree Murder following a four-and-a-half day trial.

Please join us in congratulating Investigator Burnette on this well-deserved honor and thanking him for his continued commitment to justice and service to the citizens of Bedford County.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office would like to let residents know that Santiago “The Bookman” Helguera will be in the area going door to door offering books and educational materials for sale this summer. Santiago is from Texas and is doing a summer internship with Southwestern Advantage.

Mr. Helguera has made the Sheriff’s Office aware that he will be working in the area, and provided us with all of his information. We simply wanted to share this information with our community so residents are informed.

As always, we encourage everyone to use good judgment when answering the door and making purchases from any door-to-door vendor.
