Our Story

United Way of South Central Indiana is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. We serve the communities of both Lawrence and Orange Counties in Indiana. Our History:
Our organization originally incorporated as a nonprofit organization, United Way of Lawrence County Inc. We received our tax exempt status in 1956 from the IRS under Section 501(c)(3). (*By Federal law, all nonprofit organiza

tions are required to incorporate first, and then file for tax exemption determination as a nonprofit organization.) filed with the Indiana Secretary of State to Do Business As (DBA) United Way of South Central Indiana. Our Mission: United Way of South Central Indiana works to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community to advance the common good. We provide the ability for families and individuals in need to obtain a job, have access to education, and find health resources. When you support United Way of South Central Indiana you help us to create hope and a more secure future for our community. Our Vision: We believe in the strength of our community working together. Member Agencies at United Way of South Central Indiana create a positive impact in our community. By funding local membership agencies whose missions and programs align with United Way of South Central Indiana, together we serve the needs of the Lawrence and Orange County communities. Partnered organizations include The American Red Cross, The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County, Boy Scouts, PACT, L.I.F.E, Life Designs, Paoli Senior Citizens, Salvation Army, and the Senior Citizens of Lawrence County. Community Grants:
We fund Small Community Grants throughout the year that are given out for projects in both the Lawrence and Orange County communities that serve our purpose of bettering the general well being of our residents. Our Programs:
Preschool STEAM Program:
We've partnered with North Lawrence Community Schools to implement STEAM learning in the preschool setting. The new NLCS Early Learning Center received a $50,000 contribution for the 2020-2021 school year, with $25,000 in subsequent years to support the implementation of this groundbreaking program for preschool children. With this support from United Way of South Central Indiana, North Lawrence Community Schools will be able to provide high-quality STEAM learning for preschool learners. STEAM education focuses on hands-on activities that teach science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math in an interdisciplinary approach. Young Women United:
This is a mentoring program for high school aged ladies residing in Lawrence and Orange Counties, providing guidance and leadership in valuable life skills. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library:
United Way of South Central Indiana is a Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Affiliate. Thru this program, we send out FREE age-appropriate books for young children personalized with the child’s name, mailed directly to the child’s home. Children who are up to age 5 and live in either Lawrence or Orange County are eligible for this FREE program. We are one of the over 1,800 locations of United Way Worldwide. The United Way fights for health, education, and financial stability in every community.
