🔍 TechSafeTuesday: How to Spot Deepfake (Images and videos) Before Reacting 🤖📸 AI or Real?

Have your kids or students ever showed you a shocking video or photo of a peer and asked Can you believe they did this?"

Before jumping to conclusions, pause. With generative AI tools widely available, students are frequently encountering hyper realistic, AI generated images and videos. From subtle digital edits to malicious bullying and deepfake rumors, AI generated misinformation spreads fast when we react on impulse.

​Help protect your student and their peers by teaching them the "3-Second Rule." ⏱️

​⏱️ The 3-Second Rule: Pause & Scan Before Sharing

​Before liking, sharing, or reacting emotionally to a shocking photo or clip, take 3 seconds to look past the focal point and inspect the fine details:

1. ​Check the Hands & Accessories 🖐️ Generative AI continuously struggles with fine geometry. Look for extra fingers, unnatural bending, floating jewelry, or glasses with asymmetrical glare.
2. ​Spot Background Glitches & Warping 🖼️ Scan the background edges around the person’s head or shoulders. AI tools often distort straight lines (like doorframes, windows, or tiled walls), making them look bent or strangely blurred.
3. ​Observe Natural Motion & Lighting 👁️ In deepfake videos, look for unnatural blinking patterns, skin that appears overly airbrushed, or lighting shadows that don't match the rest of the room.

​🛡️ Why This Matters:
• ​Stops "Nudification" & Cyberbullying: AI tools are increasingly misused to generate non consensual images of classmates. Verifying media before believing or circulating it protects innocent students from devastating reputational harm.
• ​Breaks the Rumor Mill: Teaching students to pause reduces the rapid spread of viral misinformation across school group chats.
