As we turn the corner to better weather we tend to see more activity in the Bedford Reservation Metro Parks. While our local park district is a crown jewel in our city, we want to remind everyone who visits to stay safe. If you are here to adventure please hike with a partner, have a fully charged cell phone, ensure you have proper footwear, bring plenty of water, bring snacks, have appropriate layers of clothing for inclement weather, notify friends of your intended route and return time. Apps like the park trail maps, All Trails, and What3Words can assist in narrowing down your exact location. Most importantly, please respect the water which contains many hazards that can lurk below the surface.

In anticipation of the increased traffic, Bedford Firefighters have been hard at work placing new rescue equipment in service. The new equipment is intended to streamline operations, and reduce the time needed to extricate an injured person from a steep slope or embankment.

We hope everyone who visits has a safe and enjoyable experience.

This past week members of the Bedford Fire Department received challenge coins from Dr. Cameron Marcus (BFD Medical Director) from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Department of EMS for their life saving actions. In March of 2026, BFD members responded to an incident where they encountered a 9YO patient who was unresponsive.

The collaboration and teamwork of many made this a successful rescue/recovery through the Chain of Survival with early detection, high quality CPR, and Advanced Resuscitation.

We are proud to recognize those that were involved:

This morning the Bedford Division of Fire was called for a deer who had fallen through a pond. On arrival a neighbor had attempted to rescue the deer with a personal watercraft. The scared animal had made it close to the shore before deciding to venture all the way back out to the middle of the pond a second time. East Tech Rescue was notified for their Ice Rescue Division. Members arrived with the appropriate immersion suits and were able to successfully assist the deer back in to the wild. The scared and cold animal was able to run off under its own power at the conclusion of the rescue.

As a matter of safety please refrain from attempting to rescue animals that may fall through the ice. Without the proper personal protective equipment this can get someone killed. These attempts can become extremely exhausting, losing balance, and falling through the ice. The potential for hypothermia/unconsciousness can occur within as little as 10-15 minutes. Please let the trained and equipped personnel perform the rescue.
