BCPS Families,

A detailed letter regarding proposed school redistricting was emailed to families today. Demographic Analytics Advisors (DAA) presented initial options to balance school capacity across the division at the September 10, 2026 board meeting.

Summary of Proposed Options:
Option 1: Approved consolidation of Stewartsville Elementary + county-wide elementary boundary adjustments.
Option 2: Stewartsville Elementary consolidation + Big Island Elementary consolidation.
Option 3: Stewartsville Elementary consolidation + Otter River Elementary consolidation.
Option 4: Stewartsville Elementary consolidation + Bedford Primary consolidation.

School Board members will be hosting a series of Town Hall meetings to discuss these options in detail, answer questions, and hear directly from our families and community members. We invite you to attend one of the upcoming sessions listed in the graphic, as well as on our website. Also, please note the important upcoming dates listed on the second graphic.

Please meet these new fresh faces in our Liberty zone elementary schools this year!

Sinclaire Cafferty is beginning her first full year at Bedford Elementary School as a 4th grade reading teacher! She was a student teacher and worked in adaptive SPED at BES before this year. She wanted to become a teacher because of the impact her life-changing teacher in high school had on her. Sinclaire is very excited to take her students on field trips this year! A fun fact about her is that she’s a twin!

Sirene Phillips is a brand new 2nd grade teacher at Bedford Elementary School. She wanted to become a teacher because she believes it's one of the only careers where you can have such a large influence on children’s lives and truly be a light for them. She hopes to have a long-lasting positive influence on her students. This year, Sirene’s goal is to finish with a classroom community that supports one another and roots for one another.

Lillian Lawson is starting her teaching career at Bedford Primary School in kindergarten. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, and baking. Her favorite sports team is the Dallas Cowboys! She has known she’s wanted to be a teacher since her first day of kindergarten. She had an amazing teacher who inspired her from day one. She hopes to build relationships with her students this year while keeping them driven to come to school to learn.

Teresa McComiskey is bringing 24 years of experience to Montvale Elementary School. She will be teaching SPED for K-3 this year! She’s excited to engage in a concept-of-word activity with her students this year. She hopes to provide the best possible instruction for all her students and support her colleagues as they collaborate together to provide the best education for their learning community.

Monica Roth is also at Montvale Elementary this year. She is in her second year of teaching and teaches 2nd grade! She plans to have her students participate in many hands-on learning activities that encourage collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. She wanted to become a teacher because she loves seeing a child understand a new concept and then grow in confidence as they apply what they’ve learned. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of teaching for her. As a second-year teacher, she’s looking forward to learning new strategies, gaining confidence in the classroom, and creating a positive learning environment where every student can succeed.

Today, Bedford County Public Schools joins our nation in remembering and honoring the heroes, victims, and families of September 11, 2001.

On the 25th anniversary, we reflect on the courage of our first responders, the resilience of our communities, and the strength we find when we stand together.

Let us honor the memory of those we lost by lifting one another up and finding ways to give back to our local community today.

Johnson Health Center is bringing preventative dental care directly to our elementary schools this fall! PK–5 students can receive cleanings, dental exams, X-rays, fluoride, and sealants right at school. Participation is 100% optional, but each school clinic needs at least 10 students registered to participate. Don't miss out on this convenient way to keep your child’s smile healthy!

Consent forms are being sent home with every student in their folders. Please return the paper consent form to school OR scan the QR code (on the cover letter or this flyer) to register online. All registration forms are due by September 25, 2026.

Smile Virginia will be coming back to BCPS secondary schools starting this month. Consent forms will be given to students in English class approximately 2 weeks before the scheduled clinic. Parents/Guardians may scan the QR code on the Smile Virginia flyer and register now.

Dental care includes a complete dental exam, x-rays, cleaning, fluoride and sealants when necessary, and in some cases, restorative care such as fillings. Participation is 100% optional, but each school clinic needs students registered to participate.

Bedford County Public Schools in partnership with the Bedford Area Educational Foundation will be using our Bedford’s Best program to recognize two staff members a month in our school division who go above and beyond to make a difference in people’s lives every day.

The Bedford County School Board will conduct its regular monthly meeting on September 10, 2026, in the School Administration Office Conference Room at 311 South Bridge Street, Bedford, VA 24523.

The regular monthly meeting will begin as scheduled at 5:00 PM. The agenda for the 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. portion of the meeting includes staff reports and Informational items. At 6:00 p.m. the Board will pause for the public comment portion of the meeting. When those items are complete, the Board will continue with Information, Action, and Consent items, as well as a closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters.

This Friday we will be introducing some fresh faces in the Forest zone! Join us in welcoming some of our newest team members!

Devon Hallberg comes to Jefferson Forest High School with almost a decade of experience. She is teaching Health and Physical Education to the 9th grade class. She’s a WVU Mountaineer fan with a love for all professional Pittsburgh sports. A fun fact about Devon is that she has studied abroad in Taiwan and Grenada. She’s wanted to be a PE teacher since she was 5 and she dressed up as her mom for career day! This year, she hopes to find a way for EVERYONE to enjoy physical activity!

Laura Tate is also new to Jefferson Forest High School, but has 21 years of experience in education.She will be teaching Biology and Environmental Sciences (9-11). She enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, camping, traveling to new countries, and watching her boys play soccer. A fun activity she’s excited to experience with her students this year is experimenting with bubbles to understand the cell membrane. This year, Laura hopes to make connections with students and ignite a love of the field of science.

Mary Brookes is a brand-new 6th-grade special education teacher at Forest Middle School this year. She loves reading, baking, and going on walks! Mary is a Liberty University graduate who loves working with kids and wants to help them grow through education.

Jackson Boyles is a new Algebra 1 teacher at Forest Middle School with 3 years of prior experience. He chose to become a teacher because he loves to coach, especially cross country, track, and swimming, and he wants to make a difference in students' lives. One of the projects Jackson is looking forward to teaching this year is a research project and presentation on authentic future job opportunities, including mathematical analysis of starting pay, bonuses, raises, and healthcare/benefits. He would like students to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of several roles, using graphs, charts, formulas, and artistic or performative engagement to communicate the findings. This year he hopes to become more confident in his classroom management and set up efficient systems to teach well while maintaining a work-life balance for his family, including his 10-month-old baby girl!

Congratulations to Mrs. Cindy Watson of Forest Middle School!

Mrs. Watson was named the inaugural Educator of the Year at the Virginia Aviation Awards! As a master teacher with the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, she has spent over a decade inspiring students through hands-on STEM learning and NASA-aligned programs. She also founded the Forest Drone Zone, empowering the next generation of pilots, engineers, and scientists.

Thank you, Mrs. Watson, for shaping the future of aviation and making Forest Middle School and Bedford County Public Schools proud!
