The Bedford Safe Campaign (BSC) advocates that Gun Violence is Preventable and believes that we can all agree on this point. Gun-related issues sometimes inspire passionate debate and when the BSC learned that firearm-related injuries surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death among people aged 1 to 17 in the United States1, we sought to better understand the data, the causes of gun injuries and work to empower our community with strategies for gun violence prevention. Whether you’re a gun owner or not, we all have a role to play in gun violence prevention. When people with different beliefs and backgrounds talk with each other and find common ground, they can have productive conversations that lead to meaningful results. Let's work together to reduce the impact of gun violence and save lives.

The BSC is a joint prevention campaign sponsored by the Bedford Police Department, Health Department and Board of Health and over the next year will be distributing monthly messages about gun violence prevention. Outreach topics include:

The importance of having productive conversations about gun safety and how to facilitate doing so.
How to safely store fi****ms and prevent access.
The relationship between access to fi****ms and death by su***de and domestic violence.
Statistics related to gun violence and children, veterans, and older adults.
Future BSC outreach will be posted to the BSC website www.BedfordMA.gov/BedfordSafe and the Health and Human Services (HHS) page, as well as provided to community partner organizations for distribution to their membership. NAMI Basics is a FREE, six-session education program designed specifically for parents and family caregivers.

You’ll gain:
- Information to better understand mental health conditions
- Practical tools and strategies for supporting your child
- Guidance on the family’s role in treatment and recovery
- Connection with other parents and caregivers who understand

The program is led by trained teachers who are also parents or family caregivers with lived experience, creating a welcoming and supportive environment to learn and connect.

In observance of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) on August 31st, the Bedford Health and Human Services (HHS) Department has partnered with the Bedford Police Department to display 978 purple flags on the Bedford Police Station’s lawn facing Great Road to honor the 978 lives lost to opioid-related overdose in Massachusetts in 2025. “Recovery City” – free screening of the acclaimed film and discussion with filmmaker and cast – Weds. September 16th, Fairbank Community Center, 40 Fairbank Road, Sudbury. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Although available on Amazon Prime, this is an amazing opportunity to view the film with a gathering of regional community members, the filmmaker and cast members.

Recovery City is “a raw exploration of what it means to be in recovery as seen through the eyes of four women whose lives share a common thread: addiction. In the working class city of Worcester, Massachusetts, Christine fights to regain custody of her young children while grappling with a traumatic past, and battling stigma from the very systems that are designed to help her. Bridget, who found recovery while in prison now facilitates peer-led support meetings for women. On the frontlines, recovery coaches Janis and Rebecca navigate the city’s toughest corners offering support and trying to save lives. In this portrait of resilience, grit, and camaraderie, the women use their lived experience to lift up those still struggling while refusing to give up hope."

This event is free and open to Bedford community members. Bedford is a partner in the Great Meadows Substance Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) Collaborative.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquito traps in communities nearby to Bedford.
