Today is NOT the Day to Burn!

Elevated Fire Weather Conditions This Afternoon...

A combination of well-above average temperatures, low relative humidity, breezy winds, and worsening drought conditions will result in elevated fire weather conditions for this afternoon. Winds will be out of the southwest this afternoon, gusting up to 20 to 25 mph, and relative humidity values will drop to around 25 to 35 percent across the area. Conditions will improve after sunset as winds slowly decrease and relative humidity values increase. iNWS is an experimental service intended for NWS core partners, including emergency

It has been a while, but a more impressive storm system is looking more and more likely for the upcoming weekend. Let’s break down the details.

A cold front will plow into Kentucky Saturday night. The latest blended guidance has increased to around 75% chance of rain for all of central Kentucky with this feature. Additionally, it appears that dynamics with this system may support a period of very gusty winds as the front passes through (chart attached).

Timing: I think the storms will begin to affect the I-65 corridor just before midnight, and then push toward the I-75 corridor by the very early hours Sunday morning. Most of your Saturday will be dry, but breezy. It’s Saturday evening into Sunday morning that will need to be watched.

Amounts: Rainfall totals should end up in the 1.0 to 1.5” range across a lot of the area by the time the storm departs to start the new work week.

Temperatures: Behind the front, temps will fall quite a bit. For a couple of weeks now I’ve been highlighting October 20th as the possible date of our first widespread frost, and it looks to me like that could very well pan out. Highs likely won’t get out of the 60s for much of next week.

It’s been a while since we’ve had gusty wind, so prepare for the upcoming weekend by securing patio furniture, lawn decorations, and anything else that may blow away or be damaged.
