Philip Johnson's First House

Philip Johnson's First House www.philipjohnsonsboothhouse.com Located in Bedford, NY, this small icon of mid-century modern architecture is Philip Johnson's first built commission.

It's sweet, it's elegant, it's full of light and air... By some measures, the first modern house in America. Certainly the first by an American trained in the Bauhaus credo.

Well this is NOT our house, somehow the caption comes up with a Jules Gregory house...he was the father of a dear friend. This website is extremely cool for browsing through tasty mid-century modern.

Philip Johnson's First House: The Booth House built 1946 - This distinctive home is perfectly sited on a knoll, on top of a 1000 foot long driveway. It commands scenic views in every direction. By today's standards, it's the perfect size home everyone is seeking: a smaller, efficient home that repla...

One of the ongoing events sponsored by Glass House Conversations, a production of the foundation that preserves Philip Johnson's estate. This is Laetitia Wolff, Executive Director of DesignNYC. www.designnyc.org.

Today much thought is being dedicated to re-designing the urban environment by both public and private agencies. Another bit about our house, just posted. It was also published in the Tri-State regional R.E. section of the NY Times this last weekend. With the wrong pictures! As in, Not of This House. Does anyone have the magazine still who might save it for us? We were out of town and missed getting it.

This is really cool. I didn't even recognize what it was at first glance-- it looked like some boulder in the woods in the thumbnail. But no, it's an aerial view of our house on a late winter afternoon!

This is a great compendium of Modern. This section, on Johnson, is spotty photo-wise but because its basically a photo stream, you can see the evolution of his styles easily. Our house is in there. The Lewis Guest House is a hoot, something out of the film "Forbidden Planet". Yeah, you know the good Dr. Morbius lives in it...

Enjoy browsing, but unless otherwise noted, these houses are private property and closed to the public -- so don't go tromping around uninvited.

Philip Johnson’s first constructed commission, the Booth House built in 1946. Also, the first Bauhaus inspired home built in the New York northern metropolitan area, preceding Philip Johnson’s own memorable Glass House and the many mid-century modern homes built in New Canaan, CT. The spare elegance...

...and a flame in the fireplace. Matt culled trees from the surrounding woods, split them for firewood and hauled them to a huge neat pile by the lower lawn. This was the main source of heat for most of the winter, and it was so soothing to lounge by the crackling blaze and smell the smoky perfume of whatever variety of tree was burning...
