The Lions Club of Bedford Hills was proud to present the Dr. Elliott Gross Excellence in Nursing Award to Kaylan Gutierrez at our recent Nursing Award Dinner.

This award recognizes a student pursuing a degree as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, compassion, and a commitment to serving others.

Kaylan, a Dean's List student at Pace University's Lienhard School of Nursing, exemplifies these qualities. Her application reflected not only academic excellence, but also a deep dedication to community involvement and helping those around her.

Congratulations, Kaylan, on this well-deserved recognition. The future of nursing is brighter because of students like you!

There’s something special about a community that takes pride in where it lives. 💙🦁

On May 2nd, the Lions Club of Bedford Hills proudly partnered with the Bedford Hills Business Association for a community cleanup throughout our hamlet. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help clean commuter lots, the Route 117 bridge area, and surrounding streets.

What inspired us most? Seeing how much our community already cares. During our pre-cleanup survey, we were truly impressed by how little litter lined our roads. That speaks volumes about the people of Bedford Hills. 👏

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteers, River Keeper for their work along Railroad Avenue, and the dedicated Town of Bedford workers who help keep our town beautiful every day.

Community service starts with small acts that create big impact. If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference, meet great people, and give back locally, come join us. New members are always welcome! 🦁✨

This isn’t about willpower… it’s about what we’re being fed. ⚠️

A massive review published in The Lancet looked at over 100 studies on ultra-processed foods (UPFs)… and the takeaway is hard to ignore:

👉 These foods are linked to damage across almost every system in the body

We’re not just talking about weight…

We’re talking about:
• Type 2 diabetes
• Insulin resistance
• Heart disease
• Chronic inflammation
• Even mental health

And here’s the part that hits home…

In places like the U.S., more than HALF of what people eat daily is ultra-processed. In some groups, it’s closer to 80%.

Why this matters for metabolic health

These foods are engineered - not just cooked.

They’re designed to:
❌ Override your fullness signals (so you keep eating)
❌ Spike and crash blood sugar
❌ Disrupt your gut (which impacts insulin sensitivity)
❌ Deliver calories without real nutrition

That combination is a perfect storm for insulin resistance…
And insulin resistance is the road that leads straight to type 2 diabetes.

The trap most people don’t see
It’s not just soda and candy.

It’s the “health” foods too:
• Protein bars
• Flavored yogurts
• Packaged snacks with long ingredient lists

They wear a healthy label… but still behave like ultra-processed fuel in the body.

What can you actually do? (keep it simple)

You don’t need perfection-you need awareness.

Start here: ✔️ Build meals around real food (meat, eggs, fish, veggies, healthy fats)
✔️ Read labels - if it sounds like a science experiment, it probably is
✔️ Swap one processed meal a day for something homemade
✔️ Slow down and let your body relearn hunger and fullness

We've lived this…

When you reduce this kind of food, something powerful happens:
👉 Blood sugar stabilizes
👉 Cravings drop
👉 Energy improves
👉 Your body starts working with you again

Awareness is step one. Action is step two.

You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight…
Just start making better choices, one meal at a time.

Your future self (and your metabolic health) will thank you. 💪🔥

S.E.E.R. your way to metabolic freedom 🎯

In the military, they teach S.E.E.R. training - skills to survive and thrive under pressure.

What if we applied that same mindset to our health?

S - Stay Aware 👀
Know what you’re putting in your body. Sugar hides everywhere. Awareness is your first line of defense.

E - Evaluate 🔍
Is this food fuel… or is it feeding disease? Real food vs. processed junk - it’s a daily decision.

E - Execute 💪
Make the call. Choose the steak over the sandwich. Eggs over cereal. Water over soda. No hesitation.

R - Resist 🚫
Cravings, social pressure, old habits… this is where battles are won. You don’t negotiate with sugar - you outlast it.

This lifestyle isn’t about perfection… it’s about discipline under pressure.

Because every meal is a mission.
And every choice is either survival… or surrender.

Stay sharp. Stay ready. Stay sugar free. 🔥🥩🥑

The Sweet Paradox - Reimagined 🍰💔➡️💪

There’s something deeply human about sharing sweets. From wedding cakes to St. Joseph’s Day zeppole, these traditions connect us to family, culture, and celebration.

But today, sugar isn’t rare anymore… it’s everywhere.

The Shift 📉

What was once an occasional indulgence has become a daily habit - and it’s showing up as rising insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, and declining metabolic health.

So what’s the answer… give it all up?

Maybe… but for some of us, it might mean something different.

A Better Way ⚖️

What if we kept the tradition but upgraded the ingredients?

That’s where more blood sugar–friendly alternatives come in.
You can still enjoy the experience, the flavor, and the connection--without the metabolic rollercoaster.

For example, using something like Rosette's Mix allows you to recreate classic treats in a way that’s lower impact on blood sugar, while still honoring the moment.

And for some people, even that may not be the best choice…

Know Yourself 🙏

Some of us know that one bite of the traditional (or even the “healthier”) version can flip a switch leading to cravings and overeating.

There’s nothing wrong with choosing to opt out entirely.

That’s not restriction… that’s awareness. That’s strength.

Keep the Tradition, Change the Outcome 🙌

Celebrate. Share. Be present.
Whether you enjoy a better-for-you version, or skip it altogether, the goal is the same:

Protect your health so you can keep showing up for the moments that matter most.

Because it’s not about the food… it’s about the life you’re building.
