Human trafficking can take many forms — from people being coerced into commercial s*x or into labor through manipulation, to threats or control over basic needs such as housing or transportation.

As Pittsburgh prepares for an influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors for the NFL Draft from April 23-25 on the North Shore and in Downtown, staff at Eden’s Farm say the event could foster conditions that make exploitation easier to hide.

Advocates say the risk is not the event itself, but rather what surrounds it.

The celebratory environment, they said, can create an increased demand for commercial s*x, and the sheer size of the crowds can give people a sense of anonymity.

On this National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Sister Sarah Crotty spoke about the "very real, very prevalent and very destructive crime" that has impacted our dear neighbors globally, nationally, and right here in Baden.

Read Sister Sarah's remarks from this morning's Mass to learn more about human trafficking, offer your prayers, and find out how to get involved in the important, ongoing local work to end human trafficking.
