Western PA Bleeding Disorders Foundation

Western PA Bleeding Disorders Foundation Welcome! Learn more, visit: http://www.wpbdf.org WPBDF serves families with bleeding disorders in 26 counties of Western Pennsylvania.

WPBDF strives to enrich the lives of those with bleeding disorders in Western Pennsylvania and respond to the needs of the community in a dynamic environment. Membership is free for people with bleeding disorders as well as their family members and friends. We provide patient assistance to our members with bleeding disorders as well as hold a variety of educational events that cover a wide range of topics. Because bleeding disorders impact nearly every area of our members lives, we strive to provide relevant and timely information about everything from raising affected children to dealing with financial stress to joint health and treatment concerns and much more. In addition to large, chapter-wide events, we have several small support groups that meet throughout the year such as the men’s group, women’s group, and a First Steps program that specifically addresses concerns of parents of children under the age of 8. Our office is located in Beaver, PA. We are a completely separate organization from the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania but work very closely with them in making sure that our members are well supported.

People living with hemophilia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, blood clots, and other blood disorders rely on strong federal public health programs.

That is why the Western PA Bleeding Disorders Foundation joined the American Society of Hematology and more than 50 organizations in urging newly appointed CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz to fully restore the staffing, leadership, expertise, and operational capacity of the Division of Blood Disorders and Public Health Genomics.

The letter also calls on CDC to engage directly with patients, providers, grantees, states, and other stakeholders as it works to address disruptions and restore continuity.

ASH led more than 50 organizations representing patients, health care providers, researchers, and public health professionals in sending a letter to CDC Director, Dr. Erica Schwartz urging the agency to restore the Division of Blood Disorders & Public Health Genomics (DBDPHG) to full operational capacity.

The letter highlights the Division’s critical role in supporting surveillance, data collection, laboratory services, and public health programs for people living with sickle cell disease, hemophilia, thalassemia, blood clots, and other blood disorders.

The blood disorders community stands ready to work with CDC to strengthen these essential programs and improve outcomes for patients and communities nationwide.
