We were on OPB!

Our conservation specialist, Brendan Addis, was interviewed on Think Out Loud about Oregon White Oak habitat, which once defined the Willamette Valley. Less than 5% of that habitat remains, and 96% of that is on private land. He talks about what oak restoration looks like in practice, why it matters for farmers and wildlife alike, and how our District is working with landowners to bring it back, especially on land that’s often not fit for farming anyway.

Only 5% of oak prairie habitat remains in the Willamette Valley, but the trees themselves are drought tolerant, reduce fire hazards, and greatly increase biodiversity.

Clackamas County landowner, Joe Blowers, had young adult trees that were shaded out by overgrown firs that were planted in the 70's to become Christmas trees. They were also being choked by invasive blackberries. With the help of our District and NRCS, Joe is creating a healthier neighborhood for his oaks, which has subsequently brought back native birds and pollinators. You have to watch this video!
