🚨 With freezing temperatures expected this weekend, the Beaumont Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents and business owners to take a few simple steps to protect fire sprinkler systems. Cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst, leading to costly damage and loss of fire protection.
Business Owners:
• Keep heat set at 40°F or higher in all areas, including attics, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, vacant suites, and storage areas
• Keep garage doors closed to help protect overhead piping
• Drain dry systems by clearing low-point drum drips
• Check attic insulation to make sure pipes are fully covered
• Seal drafts near piping, windows, and exterior walls
• Have a licensed professional verify antifreeze levels meet NFPA standards
Homeowners:
• Don’t turn the heat off. Keep thermostats at 55°F or higher, especially when traveling
• Keep closet doors open where the sprinkler riser is located
• Make sure insulation stays in place around piping
If a Pipe Freezes or Bursts:
• Know where your shut-off valve is and close it right away
• Do not use open flames or torches to thaw pipes
• Use a space heater or hair dryer in the general area only
• Contact a licensed fire sprinkler contractor for repairs
• Business owners must notify the Fire Marshal’s Office if a system is shut down, as a fire watch may be required
📞 If you have questions or need to report a down system you can contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 409-880-3905. Let’s all work to stay warm and safe as we get through this cold snap together.
