Calling all bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and curious beginners! Join us at the Hilton Head Library on September 17 at 11:00 AM for a fun and informative presentation all about Birding in the Lowcountry.

Discover some of the amazing birds that call the Lowcountry home, learn tips for identifying common species, and find out how you can get started with birding right here in our own backyard!

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or you’ve never picked up a pair of binoculars, there’s always something new to discover. Come learn, explore, and get inspired to look, and listen, a little closer!

Things got a little competitive on the trail camera!

Two White-tailed deer bucks were caught on camera locking antlers in an impressive display of strength. As fall approaches, bucks begin to experience changes in behavior and hormones as they prepare for the breeding season, or “rut.”

Sparring between bucks can help establish dominance and may become more intense as the rut gets closer. Our trail camera caught a glimpse of this seasonal behavior right here on the trail!

Meet the Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa velutina), an invasive species for South Carolinians to keep an eye out for.

Originally from Southeast Asia, this hornet was first detected in North America near Savannah, Georgia, in 2023. It is a predator of other bees and wasps, including honeybees, making early detection especially important for protecting our pollinators.

Identification:
• A mostly dark/black body
• A broad orange-yellow band on the abdomen
• Distinctive yellow tips on the legs
• A dark head with an orange face

But don’t jump to conclusions! Several native and non-native insects can look similar. Use Clemson’s look-alike resources to help distinguish a suspected yellow-legged hornet from other species. https://www.clemson.edu/public/regulatory/plant-industry/invasive/ylh-quick-guide.html

Think you’ve spotted one? Take a photo from a safe distance and report the sighting to Clemson University’s Department of Plant Industry. Do not disturb a nest or attempt to capture the insect yourself. https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/4654e1d5a6be4b47aa7acd2ff0a357cf

Join us tomorrow morning from 9 AM to 11 AM at Crystal Lake Park to join in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census!

Become a citizen scientist in just 15 minutes by observing and counting pollinators visiting a flowering plant. The data you collect will then help scientists better understand and protect our region’s incredible pollinators!

No experience is necessary. Whether you’re a seasoned nature lover or simply curious about the pollinators in your backyard, your observations make a difference.
