As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,686. Its county seat resides within Beaufort. The county was named for Sir George Carteret, one of the 17th century English Lords Proprietor, or for his descendant and heir John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville. Lord Carteret's family was the only one of the original eight who retained title to its "Granville District" (of North Carolina) right up to the ti

me of the American Revolutionary War. Carteret County comprises the Morehead City, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the New Bern-Morehead City, NC Combined Statistical Area. Most of the county is part of the common regional area titled "The Crystal Coast."

NEWS RELEASE: Carteret County Public Library System Launches 2026 Summer Reading Program

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (June 3, 2026) – The Carteret County Public Library System Will launch its 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a Story," on Saturday, June 13. The program combines reading activities, educational programs, and a community donation drive benefiting local seniors, giving families opportunities to learn, explore, and give back throughout the summer.

Designed for all ages, the Summer Reading Program encourages children to continue reading and learning while school is out. This year's theme explores the world of dinosaurs, fossils, and prehistoric life through reading challenges, science programs, art activities, and special events at library branches across Carteret County.

"Our Summer Reading Program helps children stay engaged with learning, encourages a lifelong love of reading, and gives families an opportunity to spend time together at their local library," said Library Director Dorothy Howell. "We are excited to offer programs that inspire curiosity, creativity, and discovery throughout the summer."

Families can kick off the summer reading season with dinosaur-themed activities, hands-on learning opportunities, and interactive displays at county library branches across the county.

In partnership with Carteret County Senior Services, the library system will also host a community donation drive throughout the summer. Participants can earn special reading program tracking stamps by donating items that support programs and services for local older adults.

Donation boxes will be available at library branches throughout the county. Requested items include:

• Household necessities: Paper towels, facial tissues, dish detergent, hand soap, laundry detergent, trash bags, and cleaning supplies.

• Personal care items: Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and body wash.
• Recreation and entertainment items: Paperback books, word search books, crossword puzzle books, candy, and snacks.

Featured programs this summer include educational performances, science demonstrations, animal encounters, and hands-on art activities, including:

• Magician Dana Hill (July 8): A family-friendly magic show featuring storytelling and audience participation at the Western Branch.
• A Pirate Encounter (July 15): A special storytime program at the Bogue Banks Branch featuring a pirate character and photo opportunities for children.
• North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores (July 20): An educational program introducing participants to native North Carolina reptiles and their habitats.
• Bright Star Theater (July 29): A live educational performance at the Beaufort Branch featuring history, science, and life-sized dinosaur puppets.
• A Time for Science (July 30): A hands-on fossil discovery program presented by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at the Newport and Western branches.
• Modern Pop Art with Michael Albert (August 4-6): An interactive art workshop using recycled materials at the Newport, Beaufort, and Bogue Banks branches.

"We want the Summer Reading Program to be an opportunity for people of all ages to connect with their libraries and support their community," said Millie Sparks, Program and Outreach Coordinator. "Whether you are a year-round resident or visiting Carteret County this summer, we invite you to join us."

The 2026 Summer Reading Program is made possible through the support of Friends of the Library groups throughout Carteret County and the Kiwanis Club of the Crystal Coast.

The program is open to residents and visitors of all ages and is designed to encourage reading, learning, and community involvement throughout the summer months.

NEWS RELEASE: Candidate Filing Begins June 8 for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (June 1, 2026) – Candidate filing for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor (two seats) will begin at noon on Monday, June 8, 2026, and end at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026. Filings will be accepted at the Carteret County Board of Elections, 1702 Live Oak St., Suite 200, Beaufort.

Candidates whose filings are accepted will appear on the Carteret County ballot for the Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor contest in the General Election on November 3, 2026.

Candidates must be at least 21 years old and a registered voter in Carteret County. A $5 filing fee is required, payable in cash or personal check.

This is a nonpartisan office, and no primary election is required.

The Carteret County Board of Elections office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will be closed Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of Independence Day.

NEWS RELEASE: Carteret County Residents Encouraged to Attend Hurricane Preparedness Expo

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (May 14, 2026) – With hurricane season approaching, Carteret County Emergency Services is encouraging residents to make plans and gather information ahead of potential storms by attending the annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, 3505 Arendell St., Morehead City.

The free, family-friendly event offers residents a one-stop resource for storm preparation. Attendees can learn from local, state and federal experts about what to expect during the 2026 hurricane season and how to better prepare their homes, businesses and families.

The expo will feature presentations from meteorologists, emergency managers, county staff and community organizations, including the Salvation Army and local volunteer groups. Representatives from North Carolina Emergency Management, Carteret County departments and other organizations will also be available throughout the event to answer questions and provide preparedness resources.

The expo will also include:
• Hurricane season outlook from the National Weather Service
• Evacuation zone look-ups
• Special Needs Assistance Program registration
• Expert presentations, including "Preparedness for Hurricane Season 2026" by Erik Heden, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the US National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC Forecast Office. Informative presentations will begin at 9:30 a.m.

A limited number of vendor spots remain available for businesses and nonprofits that provide storm-related services, supplies and resources. Organizations interested in connecting with residents and supporting community preparedness are encouraged to apply. A Hurricane Roundtable discussion, “Storm Night,” was held Thursday evening at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center. Community members joined local, county, and state partners to discuss hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and communication challenges for Down East communities.

Staff from Carteret County Emergency Services, Carteret County Health and Human Services, Senior Services at Leon Mann Jr. Enrichment Center, NC Cooperative Extension, Carteret County Government, and various Down East community partners took part in the discussion. Topics included storm planning, road access concerns, post-storm recovery efforts, and the communication challenges communities may face if normal communication systems are disrupted after a storm. The group also discussed ways to improve information sharing between residents, fire departments, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The meeting is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen storm preparation and recovery planning for Down East residents, including both full-time and part-time community members.
