FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Telephone Scam Warning
The Beaufort Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing telephone scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent the Carteret County Department of Social Services.
Victims report receiving phone calls from scammers offering “additional benefits” or assistance programs. During the call, the suspects attempt to obtain personal identifying information, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, banking information, and Medicare card information.
The scam is particularly concerning because the caller ID may display the legitimate Carteret County Department of Social Services phone number: (252) 728-3181. This practice, known as “spoofing,” allows scammers to disguise their actual phone number and make the call appear legitimate.
Residents are reminded:
• Do not provide personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call and verified the recipient.
• Government agencies will not typically request sensitive information in this manner.
• If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and contact Beaufort Police Department (252)728-4561.
• Contact the Carteret County Department of Social Services directly using a verified phone number if you have concerns regarding your benefits or account information.
• Monitor financial and Medicare accounts for suspicious activity if information has already been provided.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this scam is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
The Beaufort Police Department encourages residents to share this information with elderly family members and others who may be targeted by scammers.

Town of Beaufort – Feb. 3, 2026
Winter Weather Road Conditions & Travel Advisory

The Town of Beaufort appreciates each and every member of our community and your continued patience during this winter weather event.

All 26 miles of roadway under the Town’s responsibility are currently covered with snow and ice. Since early Sunday morning, Town staff have been working continuously to clear primary routes, treat surfaces, and open key intersections to improve safety and accessibility.

While progress has been made on main roads, many residential and side streets remain snow- and ice-covered. These areas will largely require warmer temperatures and natural melting before conditions significantly improve.

For your safety and the safety of our crews:

• Please restrict travel to essential trips only
• Avoid side streets when possible
• Allow additional time for melting and treatment efforts
• Use caution if you must drive

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as our team works diligently to restore safe travel conditions for everyone.

Thank you for supporting your Town staff and helping keep Beaufort safe.

02/02/2026

Carteret County urges residents to avoid all nonessential travel. The NC Department of Transportation are working to clear roadways, but many secondary roads remain icy and dangerous. Daytime warming may help, but refreezing is likely overnight.
