While our temperatures may be lower over the next couple of days, the humidity remains elevated...which means our heat index does as well. Extreme heat is a community issue. Older adults, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and those without access to cooling may be especially vulnerable during heat waves.

Heat waves can put extra stress on your body, making it easier to become dehydrated. Drinking enough water every day is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your health during periods of extreme heat.

✅ Drink water regularly - even before you feel thirsty.

✅ Carry a reusable water bottle wherever you go.

✅ Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.

✅ Limit sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.

✅ Check on children, older adults, and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Signs of dehydration can include dizziness, headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and dark-colored urine. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cool place and drink water immediately.

Don't wait until you're thirsty - make hydration a daily habit and help your body stay cool, energized, and safe during heat waves.

Did you know the air temperature can actually feel hotter than what the thermometer reads? The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in. Our forecasted high today is predicted to be 91 degrees today with a humidity of 62%....that means it will feel close to 100 degrees. This weekend the forecast is to be in the high 90s with around 50% humidity...that means close to 108 degrees!! To find out how hot it feels, you can use the pictured chart or the Heat Index calculator found at: weather.gov/safety/heat-index

A helping heart doesn't punch a time clock.

Former Beaufort County EMS Director Rusty Hollingsworth recently encountered a baby deer that needed assistance after becoming trapped between a vehicle's tire and frame. Thanks to Rusty's compassion and willingness to help, the fawn was safely freed and reunited with its herd.

Moments like these remind us that the spirit of service never truly fades. Whether responding to emergencies or helping a creature in need, people like Rusty continue to make the world a better place.

Thank you, Rusty, for showing that kindness is always worth stopping for. ❤️🦌 📷 credit - Susan Hollingsworth
