Congratulations to Officer Beck and Officer Etherington on completing the Field Training Officer (FTO) Course last week!
Field Training Officers play an important role in preparing new officers for the job. They serve as mentors and instructors, helping academy graduates take what they learned in the classroom and apply it in the field.
With this training complete, Officer Beck and Officer Etherington will now be able to help train and guide our new officers as they begin their careers with Beaufort PD.
Before a new law enforcement officer hits the streets solo, they spend weeks working side-by-side with a Field Training Officer (FTO). One of the most important and often overlooked roles in an agency.
An FTO is a mentor, a teacher, an evaluator, and usually the very first role model a new officer has in this career. They take what a recruit learned in the classroom and turn it into real-world skills.
That means learning how to handle a call, write a report, talk to someone on the worst day of their life, and make sound decisions under pressure. It's a relationship built on trust and high standards, because how an FTO trains shapes the officer who responds to your call tomorrow.
Last week, our agency hosted a 21-hour Field Training Officer Class, bringing together officers from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Beaufort Police Department, and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services.
Together, these officers are learning not just how to train, but how to help build the next generation of law enforcement professionals, and we thank them for taking the time to take this step.
