HONOR and RESPECT...

Today, as we mark 16 years since his passing, we remember the life and service of Drill Instructor Sergeant Charles Taliano.

Taliano was born on May 9, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963. In 1966, Taliano became a Drill Instructor and served at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.. In 1968, Taliano was photographed on the drill field and the photo would be used in the famous 'Rose Garden' recruiting campaign. The photo was taken a month before Taliano left the Corps.

After a career in publishing, Taliano returned to Beaufort, South Carolina, in 2002, where he became the manager of the Parris Island Museum Gift Shop. Sadly, Chuck passed away in 2010 at the age of 65. The final resting place for Sergeant Taliano is in Beaufort, South Carolina at the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Beaufort National Cemetery wants to thank everyone who came out to place gravesite flags on all 26,000 gravesites for the Memorial Day weekend (especially this young lady!). Here are some additional ideas for the Memorial Day weekend.

1) If you missed Flags In or still want more, come down to the cemetery and walk the grounds. Flags always fall over and need to be reset.

2) Come see the Memorial Day parade on Monday starting at 10am! You can park at the cemetery. We have restrooms too. Just remember to get here by 9:45am before the roads close.

3) Join us, the City Beaufort SC, and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War of Beaufort, SC for our Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery at 12pm. Entry to the cemetery will be through the Rodgers Street gate for onsite parking. The ceremony is at the front by the main flagpole.

4) Still not enough?! Come join us at 9am on Tuesday for Flags Out. Help the staff remove the gravesite flags and get them ready for storage until next year.

Hope to see you!

Today is National Peace Officer Memorial Day : NCA honors three who died in the line of duty and are buried at Beaufort National Cemetery:
Trooper Bruce Kenneth Smalls - Sec 58 Site 28
Lance Corporal Dana Lyle Tate - Sec 45 Site 344
Police Officer Irving E Wright - Sec 34 Site 148

Today we highlight US Navy veteran Dana Lyle Tate.
On January 8, 2002, Lance Corporal Dana Tate and Corporal D**e "A.J." Coursen were shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call on Riley Road, in Burton, at approximately 4 p.m.

A female had called the sheriff's office and complained about her and her young child being held against their will by her boyfriend. While the deputies were investigating, they were shot by the boyfriend, who was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and was hiding inside a bedroom closet.

Deputy Coursen was killed immediately, but Deputy Tate was able to shoot and wound the suspect before he died. The suspect was later taken into custody after a search.

The main cemetery flag is at half-staff today for LCpl Dana Tate and all Law Enforcement Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The flags are up in time for Armed Forces Day, this Saturday when we honor all active duty servicemembers.
