Today, Downtown Beattyville became a classroom! We were excited to welcome a group of students and instructors from the University of Kentucky College of Design to our Main Street. The students are studying historic preservation, architecture and design.

Beattyville offers a unique case study. Our downtown has faced devastating floods, fires, and other challenges over the years. Preserving our historic buildings here means not only finding new and creative uses for them, but also thinking carefully about how they can be rehabilitated to better withstand possible future flooding.

As part of their coursework, the students will be focusing on Ray Shuler’s block of buildings, with each student developing an adaptive reuse proposal exploring how these and other buildings could be given new purpose.

The group of students were from communities all across Kentucky - Lexington, Bardstown, Scottsville, Barbourville;
other parts of the United States - Wisconsin, Texas, Franklin Tennessee;
and even other countries - including Nepal and New Zealand.
We are honored that they chose Downtown Beattyville as a place to learn, study, and imagine.

We want to thank Kitty Dougoud, Kentucky Main Street Coordinator, for helping make the connection with Travis Rose and the University of Kentucky College of Design.

A special thank you goes to Superintendent Ray Shuler, a proud alumnus of both the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University, for spending his Saturday downtown with the group. Beattyville Main Street Director Teresa Mays and Superintendent Ray Shuler served as the local hosts for the visit. We also appreciate the support of the Mayor and City Council for allowing us to have today’s meeting at City Hall.

Save the Date — December 5! The class will return to Beattyville to present their adaptive reuse proposals. More information about the presentation will be coming soon.
