Honoring Officer William “Bill” Brasel

Our law enforcement family is grieving the loss of Officer William “Bill” Brasel — a 32-year veteran of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, former Sheriff, and Police Chief who faithfully served Missouri communities for decades.

Bill leaves behind his devoted wife of 40 years, Patricia. She depended on his income to meet their family’s financial obligations, and his sudden passing has created an unexpected and immediate hardship.

As she walks through overwhelming grief, she is now facing funeral expenses, the loss of household income, and urgent financial needs.

Funds raised will help pay the remainder of his final expenses and assist with immediate household needs during this difficult transition.

What does “Medical Sharps” mean?

Medical Sharps (syringes, hypodermic needles, needles attached to tubing, lancets, etc.) are considered bio-hazardous medical waste. Since ‘sharps’ potentially have disease-carrying blood or other bodily fluids on them, which can live on these objects for over a week, they are capable of ‘injecting’ that contaminated blood or fluid into anyone who comes in contact with them.

𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐖𝐍 – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4 arrested 45-year-old Benchy Couloute of Jacksonville, IL for First Degree Murder (Class M Felony).

On Monday, March 24, 2025, ISP special agents were requested by the Beardstown Police Department to assist with a homicide investigation that occurred in the 1200 block of State Street in Beardstown, IL. The victim, 37-year-old Junior Kalnoji of Beardstown, was found deceased inside the residence after BPD officers responded to a 911 call at the address.

After a thorough investigation, the case was presented to the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office, and an arrest warrant was issued for Couloute.

During the investigation, it was determined Couloute fled to the state of Indiana. Indiana State Police located and arrested Couloute, in conjunction with ISP special agents. Couloute is being held at the Marion County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office pending extradition.

Lane closure for Beardstown Bridge begins March 12
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Beardstown
Bridge carrying U.S. 67 over the Illinois River will close one lane starting Wednesday, March
12. A recent bridge inspection found the structure in disrepair that requires the closure of one
lane to accommodate normal traffic weight capacity.
In addition to the required repairs based on the inspection, a planned $3 million repair project
that was scheduled to begin this spring will also be performed. That project includes deck
patching, joint repair and structural steel repairs. The repairs are intended to ensure the bridge
remains open to traffic, without load restrictions, until a new bridge can be completed. It is
estimated that the project will be completed this fall.
Work continues to advance on the replacement of the Beardstown Bridge. Land acquisition
activities required for the new bridge are ongoing and will require additional time to complete.
“We are also continuing our coordination with the South Beardstown Drainage and Levee
District and Coal Creek Drainage and Levee District,” said Greg Heckel, Bureau Chief of
Program Development for IDOT District 6. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we
work to maintain this important river crossing and are hopeful the bridge replacement project
will be advertised for bid later this year.”
Traffic signals will be installed to assist with traffic control. Motorists can expect delays and
should consider an alternate route. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions
and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and
be alert for workers and equipment.
