Today, we remember the lives lost on this day, 25 years ago. We honor the firefighters, police officers, first responders, and everyday citizens who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Pictured below is a piece of the World Trade Center that is proudly displayed at Station 2 - a lasting reminder of the sacrifice made that day.

This morning, A-shift was called for a young male who fell off of his bike, trapping his leg between the pedal crank arm and the bike frame. After several attempts to free his leg, crews used our rescue spreaders to carefully move the crank arm away from the frame, freeing the leg. Thankfully, he was not injured, although the bike was damaged beyond repair.

Seeing Henry now without a bike on such a beautiful day got the Station 1 crew thinking. We called REI in Pinecrest and found that they had this exact bike, with only 1 left in stock. It just happened to be fire-engine red.

A-shift was able to purchase this bike and hand deliver it back to Henry, only hours after his accident. We're glad this morning's call had a happy ending!

Not pictured is Squad 1045 (FF Holtzman, FF Shellenbarger, and FF Hogya) who responded to another call as soon as we pulled up to deliver the bike.

Labor Day honors the hard work and contributions of American workers. Rooted in the labor movement of the late 1800s, the holiday recognizes the efforts that helped improve working conditions, hours, and protections for workers across the country.

From all of us at the Beachwood Fire Department, we wish everyone a safe and happy Labor Day!

Wishing a happy and healthy retirement to University Heights Fire Captain Doug Robinson!

Capt. Robinson is well known to many of our members, both as the father of BFD firefighter Seth Robinson and as an instructor at numerous trainings involving departments throughout our region.

Doug has always been a wealth of knowledge, and his experience, dedication, and willingness to teach will certainly be missed.

Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement, Capt. Robinson!

A Day of Transition, Service, and Tradition

Today, our fire department celebrated both an ending and a beginning. We honored the retirement of Captain Doug Robinson after years of dedicated service, while also welcoming Firefighter Sean Murphy as he embarks on his new career.

Chief Bob Perko captured the significance of the moment, saying, “Today brings together two very different, but closely connected, moments in our fire department. One is beginning to build his career. The other leaves behind a career dedicated to this department and the people in it.”

Mayor Michele Weiss read proclamations from the City and State Representative Eric Synenberg.

Congratulations to Captain Robinson on a well-earned retirement, and best wishes to Firefighter Murphy as he begins his journey of serving our community.

⚠️ Air Quality Alert

Wildfire smoke has moved into Northeast Ohio, resulting in poor air quality. Children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should take extra precautions.

To reduce exposure:
• Limit prolonged time outdoors, especially strenuous activity.
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Run your air conditioning on recirculate if available.
• If you experience difficulty breathing or worsening symptoms, seek medical attention.

Air quality conditions will worsen throughout the evening and into tomorrow. Stay safe!

Over the past two days, Beachwood Fire Department hosted a regional aerial operations training in partnership with The Ohio Fire Academy.

Firefighters reviewed and practiced ladder truck setup, aerial operations, ventilation, rescue techniques, master stream operations, and other essential truck company skills.

Training like this gives us the opportunity to sharpen our skills, strengthen relationships with our neighboring departments, and better prepare us to keep ourselves and our community safe.

A big thank you to The Ohio Fire Academy, our neighboring departments, and all of the firefighters who put in the work!

Training doesn’t stop because of the heat 🔥

Over the past two weeks, members spent several days honing their vehicle extrication skills using donated vehicles. Crews practiced vehicle stabilization with rescue struts and cribbing, along with using extrication tools to cut the cars, simulating difficult entrapment scenarios.

Good work put in by the crews during a very hot 2 weeks!
