Golden Valley County, North Dakota, was organized by general election on November 10, 1910, with a vote tally of 837 to 756. Prior to the county's establishment, its 1,002 square miles of land belonged to Billings County. Formation of the county after the 1910 general election was challenged but finally upheld by the North Dakota Supreme Court in 1912, at which time the county was officially designated. In Golden Valley County's more than 100-year history, twenty-two towns have dotted its landscape. The county is bordered on the east by Billings County, on the north by McKenzie County, on the south by Slope County, and on the west by the Montana border. According to US Census data, the population of Golden Valley County in 2011 was 1,752, a 2.5% increase from the year 2005. Much of the population increase is due to the impact of oil activity in the Bakken fields of the Williston Basin region. The majority of the county is rural with a population density of 2 people per square mile. There were 243 farms in Golden Valley County in 2007 with an average size of 2,347 acres. Crops harvested include wheat, peas, oats, sunflowers, hay, corn, flax, barley, and lentils. The USDA reported a count of 99 cattle farms in Golden Valley County in 2007 - down from 120 in 2002. Many of the farmers and ranchers continue to cultivate land that was first homesteaded by their ancestors in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
