Today some of our members were honored for our agency's first use of an Abdominal Aortic and Junctional Tourniquet (AAJT). Craig Gray of BoundTree Medical presented medallions and certificates of appreciation to Engineer Zachary Henderson (right), Firefighter Philip Blair (not pictured), and Probationary Firefighter Shane Lee (left).

The AAJT is a new kind of tourniquet designed to control severe, non-compressible hemorrhage in the abdomen, axilla, and inguinal regions, as well as to stabilize pelvic fractures. The crews of Engine and Medic 4, B-Battalion applied an AAJT to an adult male who was shot in the abdomen. The patient was transported by Memorial Hermann Life Flight and survived.

We are proud to be at the cutting edge of prehospital EMS and thankful for the diligence and skill of our members!

Please join us in congratulating Firefighter (FF) Gary Hausl on being nominated as the Chamber of Commerce Firefighter of the Quarter.

FF Hausl has served the Baytown Fire Department for the past 8 years, demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a strong commitment to public safety. He began his career in 2012 in Woodstock Illinois. He officially received his fire certification in 2013 and his paramedic certification in 2015. He received his Associates in Applied Science in EMS from McHenry County Community College.

FF Hausl has spent the past 6 years of his career as a Field Training Officer, where he takes an active role in helping newly hired firefighter/paramedics through the paramedic credentialing process. He holds the following certifications with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection: Master Structure Firefighter, Instructor II, Driver Operator Pumper, Fire Officer I, Hazmat Technician. As well as the following Pro Board certifications: Trench Rescue Technician, Confined Space Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue Operations.

Outside of work, FF Hausl is happily married to his wife Callie and they welcomed their first child in January. He values quality time with his family and is a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ. He attends West Conroe Baptist Church, where he is part of the greeting and Emergency Response teams.

Yesterday, we had the honor of celebrating Paramedics Jared Harrell and Jacob Dwyer on their successful completion of Fire Academy!

Individuals pursuing a career with BFD may hold both fire and paramedic certifications; however, paramedic certification is the minimum requirement for employment. Those who do not hold a fire certification when hired must attend a fire academy and, upon successful completion, obtain their TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter certification within their first year of employment.

Jared and Jacob were joined by their families and fire academy classmates to celebrate this significant accomplishment. Both have taken an important next step in advancing their careers in the fire service.

Friday, Fire Chief Kenny Dobson and Mayor Charles Johnson stopped by fire station 2 to issue a proclamation for Fire Prevention Week, with the A-Battalion crew.

This year’s theme was “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower!” Which highlighted a critical modern safety habit: preventing lithium-ion battery fires.

As household electronics like tablets, laptops, power tools, and e-bikes become part of our daily routines, smart charging habits matter more than ever:
✅ Use only the charger designed specifically for your device.
✅ Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
✅ Never charge devices under pillows, on beds, or near flammable materials.

Let’s work together to keep our homes and community safe!

Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10. This year we're focusing on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. These safety tips are small actions that can have big impacts!

🔥 Fully charged? Time to unplug.
🔥 Feels hot? Stop using it.
🔥 For tools and rides, charge outside.
🔥 Cheap charger? Don't chance it.
🔥 Soft surface? Hard pass.
🔥 On a flight? Keep it in sight.

At 0700 this morning, BFD put a brand new ambulance (Medic 1) into service. Medic 1 is an additional unit in our fleet that was added to address the growing demand for emergency service. This is the sixth ALS (advanced life support) ambulance available for emergency response 24 hours per day. The crew at Station 1 has expanded and looks forward to serving the citizens of central Baytown.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting members of City Council, City management and FCPEMSD board members for the official "push-in" ceremony commemorating the addition of Medic 1 to our fleet. The tradition of pushing equipment into the bay at the fire station dates back to the 1800’s. Horse-drawn equipment was unable to be backed in, requiring crew members to detach the horses and push the apparatus into the bay. Over time, the invention and adoption of motorized apparatus has made the need to manually move equipment obsolete. However, when new apparatus is received and placed in service, we maintain the tradition as a symbolic gesture to honor past generations and the roots of fire service.
