15 years ago today, the posture was a lot different. While one of the worst disasters recorded in history for Pamlico County it also was a milestone for better preparedness and response following Irene’s visit.

Do you remember where you were 15 years ago today? On this day in 2011, Hurricane Irene made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Irene was responsible for seven deaths in North Carolina and roughly $1.2B in damage, equivalent to $1.7B today. At it's peak, over 660,000 North Carolina residents were without power as the powerful storm moved through.

Hurricane-force winds were recorded along the North Carolina coast and areas inland as the storm made landfall. Along with the winds came significant storm surge with some locations recording values over 10 feet. Several tornadoes were also observed hours before the storm made landfall, causing localized damage to areas in northeastern NC.

🎒📚 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY — PAMLICO COUNTY

🚍 School is back in session! As our students, teachers, staff, and school buses return to the roads, let’s all do our part to keep our children safe.

🚨 DRIVERS — SLOW DOWN & STAY ALERT
• Watch for school buses and children at bus stops
• Obey all flashing red lights and stop arms
• Never pass a stopped school bus when required to stop
• Slow down in school zones
• Put the phone down and eliminate distractions
• Watch carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists
• Expect increased traffic during morning and afternoon drop-off/pick-up

🚌 FOR STUDENTS
• Stay a safe distance from the roadway while waiting for the bus
• Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding or exiting
• Look both ways before crossing the road
• Follow the bus driver’s instructions
• Never walk behind a school bus
• If you drop something near the bus, tell the driver before picking it up

🏠 PREPARE FOR THE AFTER-SCHOOL HOURS
If your child will be home without an adult, make sure they know:
📞 When and how to call 911
🔥 Your family’s fire escape plan
📍 Their home address and important phone numbers
👨‍👩‍👧 Who they can contact in an emergency
🚪 Never to open the door for someone they don’t know

🌧️ BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES
Make sure your family knows how you will communicate if an emergency occurs while everyone is at different locations. Know your child’s school emergency procedures and have a plan for reunification.

A few extra seconds of caution can make all the difference.

Our thoughts with our friends in Nash County and the Griffin family following the loss of Director Dale Griffin.

Nash County is deeply saddened by the passing of Dale Griffin, Nash County’s Emergency Medical Services Director.

Dale was a dedicated EMS professional and an invaluable member
of Nash County Emergency Services for many years. He was also a friend to all, someone whose commitment to serving others, leadership, and kindness made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him.

Dale’s contributions to Nash County and the people he served will not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his career.

Please keep the Griffin family and the Nash County Emergency Services community in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Dale..

Look Up Eastern Carolina! Sundown Ceremony for the Harrier Today!

As we say goodbye to the Harrier Jump Jet. Aka the AV8-B. A flyover will take place today over Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, and Hyde/Dare counties this Friday May 15th. The flight otherwise known as a Sundown Ceremony, is in honor of the jet’s 40 years of service to our country as we retire it from active duty use. VMA-223 here at MCAS Cherry Point, a squadron of which I have had the honor of briefing and supporting is the last active duty squadron who still use the Harrier. That is until the final flight scheduled for today. WCTI News 12
