Look Up Eastern Carolina! Sundown Ceremony for the Harrier Today!

As we say goodbye to the Harrier Jump Jet. Aka the AV8-B. A flyover will take place today over Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, and Hyde/Dare counties this Friday May 15th. The flight otherwise known as a Sundown Ceremony, is in honor of the jet’s 40 years of service to our country as we retire it from active duty use. VMA-223 here at MCAS Cherry Point, a squadron of which I have had the honor of briefing and supporting is the last active duty squadron who still use the Harrier. That is until the final flight scheduled for today. WCTI News 12

Hurricane Preparedness is upon us. This week, NCEM Swiftwater Teams from across the state converged on the banks of the Neuse River to conduct a “tune up” ahead hurricane and storm season. In multiple seasons of weather conditions, teams conducted Boat Operations, Rope Rescues and Skills, Logistics and Base Camp build outs, and Administrative sessions on Team Lead functions. 70 personnel received valuable time in functions that require constant training to be proficient in. A huge shoutout to the following teams who made the trip and put in the work this week. Rest assured these folks are well prepared for any mission they face.

Statewide Burn Ban in effect….

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

NC Emergency Management and Pamlico County Emergency Management hosted NC-HART training this week on the banks of Camp Seafarer and the Neuse River. This is one of the resources available for life safety rescues in remote areas or hazardous locations that access is limited. We would like to give a huge shout to the following agencies that participated and made this training a huge success. Scroll the photos and check out what these folks do.

⚠️ BLACK ICE & MELTED SNOW ROAD SAFETY ⚠️

As temperatures fluctuate, melted snow can refreeze and create black ice—a nearly invisible but extremely dangerous road hazard. Black ice often forms on bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and low-lying roads, especially during early morning and nighttime hours.

đźš— Travel Safety Tips:
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns
• Use headlights so other drivers can see you
• Be especially cautious on bridges and secondary roads
• If you encounter ice, stay calm and steer gently

👣 Pedestrian Safety:
• Watch for icy sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots
• Wear shoes with good traction
• Use handrails when available

If you don’t have to travel, please stay home until conditions improve. Your safety is our priority.
