🐯 INSIDE BAY MINETTE :: Bay Minette Elementary School

At Bay Minette Elementary School, they work hard so they can play hard!

Home to approximately 850 students from Pre-K through 6th grade and 120 faculty and staff members, BMES believes all students can and will learn at high levels. Their commitment is to Educate, Encourage and Excite students about learning while creating a safe, welcoming and engaging place for them to grow. 🧡🖤

And that work starts early! Each morning at 6:55 AM, Principal Allyson Maxwell meets with her leadership team for prayer before welcoming hundreds of Tigers through the doors.

In addition to challenging and supporting students academically, BMES is focused on preparing students for an ever-changing world, with opportunities for students to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM).

🎉 But remember — they play hard, too!

On the first Friday of every month, students who meet attendance and behavior expectations come together for a big BMES Family Event in the gym. Some months bring special guests like Baldwin County High School student-athletes, dancers, and band, while others feature faculty-versus-student games and competitions.

It's a chance to celebrate a month of hard work, good choices and plenty of Tiger Pride! 🐯

From Pre-K students beginning their school journey to sixth graders preparing for their next chapter, the BMES team is committed to helping every Tiger experience success.

👇 BMES families and alumni, we want to hear from you! What is your favorite Bay Minette Elementary memory or tradition?

✨ SUPER CITY SPOTLIGHT ✨

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Lt. Christian Hall of our Fire Department! 🚒

👨‍🚒 Christian has served with the BMFD for six years and earned the rank of Lieutenant in May 2024. Known as a strong leader and mentor with extensive fire service knowledge, he helps keep our community safe as the officer in charge of Engine 2 on C‑shift—leading crews on all types of emergency calls and overseeing training when the training officer is unavailable.

Lt. Hall is a Bay Minette native and a 2011 graduate of BCHS. He has been married to his wife, Rena, since 2020. Along with their two dogs, Christian and Rena are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy activities such as four wheeling, boating, fishing, golfing, and hunting.

A few fun facts about Lt. Hall:
🎸 His walk-up song at work would be: “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC
🍲 Favorite local event: The North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce's Annual Crawfish Cookoff
🏷️ Vote for best hidden gem in town: Wilson Taylor Mercantile

From fighting fires and educating his community on fire safety, to handling daily behind-the-scenes administrative duties, training, and logistics needed to keep the fire station running smoothly, Lt. Hall is proud to be a part of this vital department working 24/7 to keep our community safe.

👏 Join us in thanking Lt. Christian Hall for his dedication to our city!

🔥 Inside Bay Minette: Fire Department 🚒

For almost 120 years, Bay Minette Fire Department (BMFD) has been a sheltering presence for our city.

The department was founded in 1908 and as of today, it serves approximately 15,000 citizens out of the Fort Beveridge Fire Station on D’Olive Street. This includes many county residents who are within the boundaries of the 88 square-mile jurisdiction.

👨‍🚒 The brave men and women who make up the fire crews are BMFD’s most valuable asset. These firefighters are out on the frontline, providing professional and dependable service in times of need.

BMFD operates in three shifts, each with five members who work 24 hours on duty then 48 hours off duty. These firefighters are available 24/7 - 365 days a year.

💪 In service to our community, each firefighter must undergo rigorous training and qualifications. Minimum training goals for each BMFD firefighter are:

Firefighter I & II certification

Rapid Intervention Team

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Hazardous Material Technician

Apparatus Operator

Aerial Operator

Rope Rescue Technician I & II

📓 Combined, this equates to 600+ hours of instruction and testing. Each member also completes a minimum of 240 hours of refresher training annually.

In the midst of all these daily duties and training schedules, BMFD makes time to host fire station tours for local churches, schools, and civic groups; encourages local families to drop-in for visits and tours; and visits local schools and daycares during Fire Prevention Month every October for presentations on home fire safety.

📆 Fire Prevention Month wraps up this year with their Annual Family Fun Day on October 31st at the Fire Station. Grab the family, put on your costumes early, and come take part at the festivities!

Brownfields Grant Supports First Step in Revitalizing Standard Furniture Site

BAY MINETTE, Ala — The City of Bay Minette is pleased to announce that the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission (SARPC), has awarded Phase I funding for the formerly industrial Standard Furniture property. This EPA-funded Brownfields Assessment Grant award supports essential environmental assessment and early planning work needed to prepare the site for future revitalization.

Earlier this year, SARPC received a $1.5 million EPA Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant, positioning the region as a leader in brownfield revitalization and strengthening local efforts to return underutilized properties to productive use. This grant was one of only two awarded in Alabama. The coalition, led by SARPC in partnership with the Baldwin County Economic Development Foundation and the Escambia County Commission, is focused on reducing environmental uncertainty, supporting economic development, and helping communities transform long-vacant properties into assets.

Throughout 2026, Bay Minette city leadership has worked closely with the Standard Furniture property owners to complete the review processes necessary to secure Phase I funding. This collaboration has been essential in advancing the site toward new opportunities.

Phase I funding will provide 100%-funded environmental and planning services, including a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, asbestos-related evaluations, and preliminary redevelopment and reuse planning—all at no cost to the property owner. These activities establish the environmental groundwork needed to understand site conditions and guide future planning under the Brownfields
Program.

City leadership is encouraged by this milestone and looks forward to continued collaboration with the property owners and SARPC as future opportunities for the site are explored.
