The City of Bay City is pleased to announce the launch of Phase 2 of the Fire Hydrant Preventative Maintenance Program. This phase will include hydrants that were unable to be tested during Phase 1 and will continue eastward throughout the City. The program includes comprehensive hydrant assessments, sandblasting and painting, and fire flow testing to help ensure the reliability and performance of the City's fire protection infrastructure.
As part of this effort, residents will notice an updated appearance on maintained hydrants. Hydrant bodies will be painted silver, while the bonnet (top) and side caps will be color-coded in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. The colors—red, orange, green, and blue—indicate the hydrant's available water flow capacity and provide firefighters with critical information during emergency response. For example, a red hydrant delivers less than 500 gallons per minute (GPM), while a blue hydrant provides 1,500 GPM or more.
The City's contractor, LSPS Solutions, will be conducting this work and will be operating clearly marked vehicles. Please refer to the attached map for the locations of hydrants included in this phase. During fire flow testing, residents may experience temporary reductions in water pressure. If you experience prolonged low water pressure, water quality concerns, or have questions regarding the program, please contact the Public Works Department at 979-323-1659.
