πŸ€πŸŒŸ Cranford Places 2nd in State Watermelon Growing Contest

🌱 Each year, 4-H members across the state invest in developing new skills and exploring various industries in Georgia. One of those areas is agriculture! Georgia 4-H holds an Annual Watermelon Growing Contest each year for youth to see who can grow the heaviest watermelon in the state. Appling County 4-H proudly participates in this contest each year and often has youth excelling in this area of agriculture-related 4-H projects.

πŸ‰ The Georgia 4-H Watermelon Contest is sponsored through generous support of The Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, along with the Georgia Watermelon Association. The contest provides youth the opportunity to exhibit their learned knowledge and skillsets through their ability to cultivate and produce one or more watermelons over the growing season. Youth must develop preparation skills, research in planting and growing methods, and acquire patience through the growing period as 4-H’ers learn about the field of agriculture and environmental science. Through this project, youth often gain an understanding of basic principles for growing fruits and vegetables in a garden as they learn about space, depth, and irrigation needed to produce a successful harvest. This contest not only serves as a fun summer project but leads to the development of simple life skills that help youth become beyond ready for life in various ways.

πŸ€ Appling County 4-H is proud to have one of our very own within the top placings in the state again this year! Cason Cranford was named 2nd Place in the state for the 2026 Georgia 4-H Watermelon Growing Contest with her watermelon weighing in at 50 lbs! Cason has had incredible back-to-back watermelon growing seasons as she was named the 1st Place State Winner in the 2025 Contest. We congratulate Cason on her incredible watermelon harvests in the past few years and recognize her achievements in this area of agriculture as she continues to invest in learning the meaningful practice of managing a home garden to yield a sweet harvest.

Congratulations to Cason Cranford on this wonderful achievement! ✨

We wrapped up Summer Canning & Planning at the beginning of the month with Appling County Young Farmers

The featured produce was a fan favorite: boiled peanuts! Our FACS Agent shared recipes for peanut egg fried rice, boiled peanut hummus, and a boiled peanut pie!

The Appling County Food Processing Plant is closed for the season. But they’ll be back up and running next summer waiting to help you preserve your harvest. If you haven’t already, make sure you check them out!

Summer Cooking Club was a hit! We practiced measuring, knife skills, food safety, and place settings. We enjoyed no bake cookies (measuring), taco bar (knife skills), kool-aid slushies (measuring and blending), pizza sandwiches (all the skills πŸ˜…), fresh baked bread (patience 😁), and creamy lemon blueberry pops. Participants were actively engaged in lessons from our current FACS agent, Mrs. Carrie, and retired FACS agent, Mrs. Becky- then put all their new knowledge to use! We had a fun and informative two days in the kitchen!

πŸ€πŸŒŸ 4-H BB Team Places 5th Overall at Daisy BB Nationals!!

The 2026 Daisy BB Nationals in Rogers, Arkansas has been incredibly memorable!! The Appling County 4-H S.A.F.E. BB Team absolutely excelled as they competed against teams from across the country over the course of the event! Georgia 4-H had incredible representation with teams from across our state, many of which exhibited excellence for their counties and teams as well! We congratulate them on their success as we celebrate the incredible work of 4-H shooting sports programs across the state and nation!

🎯 Daisy BB Nationals (Daisy Outdoor) offered youth the opportunity to gather with countless teams and individuals from other states, the best of the best, and learn from those who share a deep love and value for youth target sports programs.

🌟 Youth target sports programs not only build impeccable athletes but equip young people with skills to develop into future leaders as they foster a sense of belonging, promote goal setting and management, encourage a growth mindset, and offer real-life experiences that build readiness skills.

πŸ€βœ¨ Appling County 4-H BB is bringing home many awards and recognition for both the team as a whole and for a few individuals!
