On Tuesday night, Oct. 21, several Ida County emergency organizations worked together as a multiple injury accident drill was conducted just south of OABCIG High School.
The drill was a collaborative effort between responding agencies including the Ida Grove Fire Department, Ida County EMS, and ambulance crews from Ida Grove, Battle Creek, and Holstein, in addition to Horn Memorial Hospital.
The scenario involved a tractor with one adult and two children pulling an empty sprayer, which was rear-ended by a vehicle carrying one adult and five children.
The scene of the ‘accident’ was located on 255th Street, a gravel road behind the high school in Ida Grove.
The Ida Grove Fire Department used stabilizing jacks, the Jaws of Life, a window saw and a Sawzall, to extract the patients in the car. The tractor was upright, requiring no extraction means.
Helping to plan the event was Ed Sohm of Ida County Emergency Management; Sami Neville, the ER (Emergency Room) director at Horn Memorial Hospital; Joyce Schnable of the Ida Grove Ambulance department; and Jake Sholty, Preparedness Coordinator at Horn Memorial; as well as others.
