Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

On September 11, 2001, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and ordinary citizens ran toward danger to help others. Many made the ultimate sacrifice, and countless first responders continued to experience the physical and emotional effects of that day for years afterward.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and all who answered the call to serve.

We remember their courage. We honor their sacrifice. We will never forget.

Suspect Arrested Following Pennfield Township Assault, Overnight Search

On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at approximately 5:06 p.m., Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies responded to the 100 block of Darlene Lane in Pennfield Township for a reported assault.

Initial information indicated that an adult female and adult male had been assaulted inside a residence by a suspect later identified as a 33-year-old Battle Creek man.

Upon arrival, deputies located both victims with visible facial injuries. The female victim also sustained a significant head injury caused by a blunt object. The victims told deputies the suspect was last seen inside the residence, had access to several fi****ms, and had made multiple homicidal and suicidal statements.

LifeCare Ambulance personnel treated both victims at the scene.

Due to the reported threats and access to fi****ms, deputies established a perimeter around the residence and made multiple announcements directing the suspect to exit. As law enforcement activity continued and residents began gathering outside, a shelter-in-place advisory was issued for the immediate area as a precaution to protect the public.

After the suspect did not respond to repeated announcements, the County Aerial Support Team (CAST) deployed an interior drone to search the residence while an additional drone provided aerial support. The interior search did not locate the suspect.

The CCSO Special Response Team then conducted a full search of the residence and associated outbuildings due to the ongoing concern that the potentially armed suspect could remain on the property. The suspect was not located. Once the property was cleared, the CCSO K9 Team conducted a search of the surrounding neighborhood, which also did not locate him.

Law enforcement continued searching throughout the evening, while the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority received several tips regarding possible sightings of the suspect.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., the Battle Creek Police Department K9 Team located the suspect hiding inside an exterior doghouse at a nearby residence. He was taken into custody without incident and turned over to CCSO deputies.

The suspect was lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on charges of Felonious Assault, Non-Aggravated Assault, and Resisting and Obstructing Law Enforcement.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office thanks residents for their cooperation with the shelter-in-place advisory and for providing information throughout the search. Incidents of this nature can evolve quickly, and the advisory was issued based on the information available at the scene to help ensure the safety of residents and responding personnel.

CCSO also thanks the agencies that assisted in bringing the incident to a safe resolution, including the Battle Creek Police Department, Emmett Township Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, LifeCare Ambulance, and Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: “Missed Jury Duty” and Warrant Scams 🚨

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning residents about an ongoing scam involving missed jury duty and supposed warrants for arrest.

Scammers may claim you missed jury duty, failed to respond to a subpoena, or have a warrant for your arrest. They may use official-sounding language, local information, names of law enforcement agencies, and even official-looking paperwork to make the scam seem legitimate.

Don’t fall for it. Courts and law enforcement will not call and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest, nor will they ask you to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps.

If you receive a call like this:

• Hang up immediately.
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money.
• Do not use any number the caller provides.
• Instead, verify by calling the non-emergency line directly at 269-781-0911.

👥 Scammers rely on fear and urgency to get people to act before they have time to think. Even if a caller knows local information or provides paperwork that looks official, stop and verify independently.

Even if you would recognize a scam, someone you know might not. Talk with parents, friends, and older neighbors, and share this post to help protect others in our community.
