Today, please join us in congratulating and thanking Lowe's of Battle Creek and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK!

The Ann Shafer Community Service Award is given annually to an individual or organization that has significantly impacted S.A.F.E. Place. Ann was an advocate for many. She served as a Calhoun County Commissioner for ten years, was the founding member of the Battle Creek Chapter of the National Organization for Women and served on the Board of numerous other community organizations. Ann served on the S.A.F.E. Place Board of Director’s from the organization’s inception until 1991.

This year, we had the wonderful problem of having two businesses that have truly gone above and beyond, so we we were pleased to present the Ann Shafer Community Service Award to the team at Lowe’s of Battle Creek and 2 Men & A Truck!

This past year, Lowe’s helped us meet a critical need by renovating our communal kitchen. Each year the kitchen provides space for cooking and meals for over 600 adults and children, so it needed a lot of love. Lowe’s selected S.A.F.E. Place as the recipient of their Lowe’s Heroes project and donated the materials and labor to install new cabinets and countertops. This project created a welcoming space that is functional for those we serve.

The team at 2 Men & A Truck have been volunteering and hosting Movers for Moms drives for many years. We rely on their shelter donations each year to provide hygiene supplies and houseware items to survivors and their children in shelter. Additionally, whenever we have a need for assistance with moving heavy items throughout our building, they send a whole crew. Recently, they helped us clear out our garage to prepare for its renovation into an apartment which included a chain of their team and our staff passing items up our 3-story fire escape to move items to the attic.

Lowe’s and 2 Men & A Truck are outstanding businesses that we are lucky to have in our community, and we thank them for their ongoing support! 💜

Over the next few days, we are going to be sharing our award winners from the Restoring Hope Gala!

Anne Schwarz was a valued board member beginning in 1985. Her commitment and dedication to S.A.F.E. Place began as one of the founding board members and continued as president of the board. She was instrumental in raising funds for the original shelter. She truly represented all the dedicated volunteers who serve S.A.F.E. Place, and we are pleased to have established this award in her honor.

This year, we were thrilled to present the Anne Schwarz Outstanding Volunteer award to Cara Gandy.

Awhile back, our staff identified a need among the adults and children in shelter for haircuts as cost is often a barrier. We put out a request and Cara immediately responded and has remained a dedicated volunteer for over a year. Cara volunteers each month to provide free haircuts to survivors and their children staying in our shelter.

While this is an incredibly selfless act, Cara’s warm and engaging approach makes the experience more than just a haircut for those we serve. We all know how much our hair can be part of our identity, so it is truly an incredible gift to our clients to help them maintain that piece of themselves. After getting their hair done, many of our clients share feeling safe and cared for during their time with Cara and that is what makes her truly special.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Cara! 💜

It's hard to believe it has already been 2 weeks since our 19th Annual Restoring Hope Gala Dinner & Auction!

Today we are excited to officially share that the event was a tremendous success! With deep gratitude to our sponsors, attendees, bidders, and raffle purchasers, we raised $112,207 to support free, confidential services for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking in Calhoun, Eaton, and Barry counties. 💜

Special thanks to Jessica Harthorn for emceeing her fourth consecutive year, Jacob Washburn for another outstanding job as our live auctioneer, Norman Light for bringing the energy as Calhoun County’s best DJ, and the DoubleTree by Hilton for graciously hosting our event.

We are so grateful for our community's continued support of this event and are already looking forward to hosting you all again in 2027!

Join our Coordinated Community Response Team at an upcoming training or technical assistance day!

The Coordinated Community Response Team is a training and technical assistance space hosted by the Calhoun County Youth Violence Prevention project, a program of S.A.F.E Place and Sexual Assault Services. We focus on the intervention and response to violence faced by youth in our community. This space is open to all adults in Calhoun County, but particularly those who interact with youth professionally or personally.

We meet on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 10am via Zoom, alternating monthly between live training days and technical assistance days. Training topics include teen dating violence, trauma-informed schools, domestic violence, technology-facilitated abuse, and more. There is no commitment, just join the meetings and technical assistance days when they are helpful/relevant to you!
